the fuel tank discussion came up a while ago....it really made minimal effect to volume with my setup.....and no effect on sound quality
however if the boot is airtight/sealed....there is the issue of damaging the 6x9's in the rear parcel shelf
easiest way to solve this problem was to box the 6x9's...
however i think Justin (Juzzo) is porting his parcel shelf ??
if your gonna have your sub in the boot i suggest doing what i did for security and making a bracket that secures with a Nut and Bolt into the floor of the boot.....much harder to steal
just make sure your boot doesnt leak water as these cars are old they tend to

have a look at a post for in the parts wanted, JOHNA LOMU FUSIONS SUBS, freaky and i have thrown around some ideas.
when it come to securing your deck, in terms of making it harder to steal or just to hold it still, if you wanna just keep it still the best thing you can do is get some small steel braces and screw them in to the dash from behind and then conect it to the unit to support and hold it in place.

i also have some ideas and designs for a dual 12" inclosure for the drivers side of the boot, with a port through to the cabin.
will have some pics in a bit, and will soon have some plans and dimensions.

With securing the head unit in mine to make it a bit harder to get to, I've bolted a metal strap from the back of it onto my chassis. This makes it a lot harder to just pull out and run away with. They have to sit there and actually unbolt everything and with the original console it's difficult and takes quite a while expecially if you don't know the car. If it's not just a smash and grab they don't usually worry about it.
In regards to the sub, I don't have a problem with sound quality, but if you want it to sound louder then direct it to the side of your boot. I don't know why it does it but it sounds so much louder.
Those boots aren't really air tight. If you've ever taken the back seat out of your car all there will be is a peice of foam (if you're lucky) between it and the fuel tank. No fire wall, just some cross braces. So I don't think there will be a problem with damaging the 6x9's.
I'm looking for a place to mount my splits, I don't want to have them in my doors because of the window mechanism and you have to have them in spaces so they sit out a long way. If you find anywhere else to monut them let me know.
Cheers

hmm its something to think about!!
might take the back seats out and replce it with 2 15'' subs then throw a custom (super thin) seat cover over it so it looks like a seat still

boxes for your rear speakers are ok, but in reality they take away from your sound quality, they make the speakers sound to boomy and take away the sound reproduction qualitys.

I will try this one again, I have no idea what happened before.
As I was trying to say, my old RA28 had a big box with 2 10in. subs in the hatch area. This sucked as it meant I didn't have any boot space. This started to piss me off after a while, so I decided to install them in the rear quarters, next to the back seat (where the bins are).
It took a little bit of stuffing around to get the quarters properly sealed and at the correct volume, but when it was finished and the panel retrimmed, they sounded great, looked like nothing was there and I had my boot back.
There is heaps of depth in the rear quarters of these old celica's and you can fit a 10in. sub in where the bins are quite easily. The only problem you'll have is trimming. I originally made up some speaker grills to cover the rectangular cut out in the panel. I did a botch job of them and decided to coverthe whole panel with material (I was retrimming the doors as well).
The end result is really neat. You should look into it.
The new 28 I have has 2 15's in the boot. I plan on getting rid of them and putting some 10's in the quarters just as soon as I can get around to doing it.

I've got two brackets off a curtain thing mounted in the car which the stereo then mounts to using allen key type screws reducing the chance of them having the right tool to undo it,

the best for of security is a STEALTH installation, because if it can be seen, then technically it does not exist. So if a thief cant see it, then why would he bother.
All im saying is be carefull about using shelf ports and putting large speakers into the rear shelf, and if you have a removable face CD player, PLEASE remove it, thats what its for, and most of all, dont EVER leave your cd collection sitting on the front seat of your car, always hide them or take them out.
Im talking from experiance, its never happened to me cause i have been super carefull, but i have heard way to many stories about stupid people getting stuff stolen, when if it was not so obvious, then it may not have happened. And guys EXPENSIVE BRAND NAME CAR AUDIO STICKERS ARE NOT A GOOD IDEA EITHER.

G'day,
I also have a ra28 with 2 15in subs.... but i did take out my back seat....l it is now dead flat in the back and is engineered as a two seater.
As for the head deck i cut out my middle airvents and mounted it there. I had a custom panel laser cut from black perspex as the suround and covers the whole area where the vents used to go.
Cheers

i would be interested to know what you are doing about AIR?? eg, heater venting, aircon etc etc.... cos i have both and wondered about putting the stereo there... but decided against it unless i can move those vents to vent somewhere else...

g'day,
Yeah i agree stealth installs go off.....
i have my 2 15's mounted in a anodised aluminium plate... but it has a cover that goes over them so i have the best of both worlds.....
Will see if i can get a cam and take pics.
As for air i found there was plenty enough through the side vents.....
obviously i blocked off where the air used to go from the distribution box (for want of a better description). Atlas i have no air con.... not much room with the 1g... but will be looking further into that soon!
Cheers

Well ill post some pics up of my install soon, i just finished the rest of the system...as some of you may know. The two subs are now in the floor of the tyre-well, amps mounted on the wall infront of the tank. Subs are ported through two ports through the parcel shelf, angled at 90' towards the front of the car. Taken me long enough, probably take me longer to re-fibreglass my door trims since the car isnt here and the motor is being rebuilt.
However, my head unit is still mounted rather "gayley" in the dash, sometimes when i push the face on the whole unit moves in
Have a good one guys
