EEK - Black Oil Eruption! Wed, 20 April 2005 01:14 Go to next message
I know ive been blowing a bit of smoke under high revs lately.. but last night i got another problem.

Revved it on a cold start just in neutral.. and when i switched it off went back to get something from the boot. thats when i noticed the front of the skyline parked behind me covered in oil which had just sprayed out my exhaust..

what on earth caused that??

I highly doubt it's oil, it'll most likely be water from condensation mixed with carbon deposits from the exhaust.

You should see my driveway, black everywhere.

Just get some degreaser and a rag, it wipes straight off.

Nothing is wrong with your 7M. Every car does it, carbon deposits + condensation = black shit flying out the exhaust

ok. just concerned as it was a LOT of black shit on the bumper of the skyline.. like covering the whole front of it and part of the bonnet.. no paint visible through it..

ever think that on cold start your car is designed to run rich?

could just be covered in fuel instead Smile

Dude, I have a bucket that goes under the exhaust of one of the family cars... It looks like a bottom less pit it is that dark!
Ours will repaint out whole driveway (Around 75M long) and then down to the end of the road (200m long)

And that's AFTER we've already sent the bucket completely black

Don't worry about it...

it couldn't possibly be oil - just no way if all the pistons are unbroken & still in one piece.
it also shows an Abused Engine. one that has been run many times without getting up to operating temp - either short trips (under 20 minutes run time)or no thermostat, or bad choke adjustment/cold start system, or

because some people just like to start up & shut down engines for no apparent reason.
