Im very close to buying a mig welder.
Im going to drill 1 or 2 small hole's in between each spot weld and fill it with mig all around the car for more stiffness.
Is this illegal? Will i need an engineers report?

Your better off just adding some weld to cleaned up seam rather than drilling a hole and then trying to fix that by wedling it up. So you end up with "stitches" of weld rather than just spot welds.
It is not illegal and nor will you need to get it engineered.

What your looking at doing is called "double spot welding"....
the process as I understand it is to drill, with a special drill bit so that you only drill through one sheet, not both. You then weld inside the hole.
I think its need in some racing classes (not sure if any are australian, or not).
I think seam welding would be an easier option personally, and will also give better results if you trying to stiffen the car.
Cheers

i think id be being very carefull drilling out the spot welds and welding them up.....if you do it do it on a chassis rack cause as you remove the spot welds it allows the body to flex and then the heat from welding can warp it to so you could end up with a chassis like a bannana.....also if you do it dont water cool the welds, may cause cracking.....and do one side then the other side of the car letting each one cool down till you do the next one....

Personally i would put it up on a jig and drill out the original welds and double spot weld, looks so much more cleaner and add new ones in between the old ones to stiffen, focus around the strut towers and front and rear wheel arches, around where front subframe meets firewall etc. when my mate seam welded his datsun 1600 he did ONE weld at a time going from left front to right rear to right front to left rear etc. to allow for cooling and to stop any warpage in the chassis, also had chassis on a jig so that it remained straight. I know it is illegal to cut and shut any chassis rails but replacing things like radiator supports and other parts of the body is fine. If you know what your doing you can do anything to the chassis (like putting a new front end on) and it will never be picked up and its not dangerous (IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING) and will be stronger than original anyway. Laws like that are for a reason and that is because so many people think they are clever and will half do a job, So practice on a shit body with your seam welding, watch what happens when you get happy with that welder and take your time. It took my mate 3 weeks to do his body in between work coming in and out of his workshop so be patient.
good luck

the hole is pretty small, small so i can get the same penetration to the front has well has the back of the panel.
im not drilling the spot welds, im drilling in the middle of two spot welds.
Getting a good spot welder, only in a panel shop and its a lot more expensive (paying for labour), ill stick with the mig.

Hi guys, I replaced the entire rear hatch seal lip on an RA28, using the exact method as proposed by "bubbles". Absolutely no dramas, as long as you watch the heat,ie. weld one corner switch to the opposite for the next weld.
If you have ever tried to tear a Toyota Factory spot weld apart, you will know how strong they are. The method proposed by "bubbles", should be just as strong.
cheers Chuck.
