Wireless Router Security? Wed, 20 April 2005 05:28 Go to next message
Hey All,

I regret to say I own a D-Link Wireless Router so...
Does anyone know from experience which is better? WEP or WPA-PSK? I do have the MAC Filter switched on as well Smile

Also should I run Open System or Shared Key for Authentication?

Cheers.

wep can be cracked easily - however -

if you change your wep key regularly will provide enough of a pain in the arse affect for 'home' hackers to lose interest.

if you were a business or something else it wouldn't deter an 'interested party' for long.

Mac addresses can be spoofed.

WPA-PSK should be adequate for home use (in theory WEP should be adequate for home)

Shared key.

that's all I have to say.

PM me if you want more high end technical garb on wireless and wireless security.

One of the best security measures for wirely is Don't broadcast your SS_ID. That way someone has to be specifically looking for your network rather than stumbling across it.

WPA is supposedly more secure however, I am new to the wireless world (give me cat5 any day!). but I do know that they can both be beaten, if the person knows how - I doubt there are many that do.

My main points for wireless security:
Don't broadcast ss_id
Enable Mac Filters.
Use long key lengths (5 characthers is easy to crack! 20 harder and so on!)
Always have a firewall set up (most WAP/Routers have this feature) unless there is a specific reason BLOCK all incoming ports.
