icon9.gif  AE92 Corolla Tape Deck Help Sun, 24 April 2005 02:30 Go to next message
hey i just bought a holden nova (toyota corolla ae92) and i was hopeing to put in a new cd player. i havent got the car workshop manual yet. im getting the gregories one on thursday when the stock comes in. but i was looking at the original tape deck at the top and took the face off. i then realised that there was the tape deck there that was only half the size of the cover and it was surrounded by metal. i was hopeing that someone would be able to tell me if that was normal? how to get it out? and what cables match with what cable from the cd player?
i hope you guys can help me Smile

hey. well i took it apart and everything and have it all disconnected. but now i am left with a dilemma. the wiring.
it has several different names for things.

it has L-com R-con R.R L.R R.F L.F

i understand that L.F means left front and etc but im confused because im not sure about the L-com and R-com and what they are supposed to hook up to. and why the wiring has rear wires when there is only two front speakers?

i know i dont know much about car audio and cars in general but im hopeing that you guys can help me to learn some of this stuff and your help would be greatly appreciated Smile

The wiring for the rears would be for the sedan. They have rear speakers (I'm guessing the hatch doesn't).

You can get wiring adapters from most places that sell car audio. They basically plug into the factory loom and then plug straight into whatever brand of head unit you have. Obviously you have to get the right one to suit.

If you're not good with electronics, you'd be best spending the $20 or so on one of those. Otherwise, get in there with a multimeter or test light and figure out which is which. It shouldn't take more than five minutes. Then cut, solder and heatshrink as necessary. You only really need to figure out what wires the ignition and +12v is. I forget what colours they are on the factory loom.

You would normally expect 2 wires per speaker. R Com and R Com are wires that are common to both speakers on the same side.
i.e. LF, LR + LCom and RF, RR + RCom.

Just check that wiring because I thought it would be a LF, RF and Front Common plus LR, RR and Rear common.

Either way, you need to be carefull wiring in a new deck that requires 2 wires for each speaker. Treat the xCom wire as a '-' and the others as '+'.

Your hatch has connectors for the rear speakers behind the plastic in the boot, near the top of the struts / just behind where the seat back meets the rear doors.

Thanks heaps yeah i had a talk to someone who is into these kind of things and workd things out... where about would i be able to get that connector for the syetem so i dont have to weld or cut any cables?
the person i was talking to explain where each cable went and all that but i dont really want to have to weld it.
yeah i have the hatch thats why it dont have inbuilt speakers. if i do choose to hook up the back speakers (later on) what would i used for the negative (-) connection if the R-com and L-com are being used already?
and is it easy to get to the back speaker cables?

thank you so much for your infomation guys. Smile

SuperCheap and AutoBarn have them, other car audio places might have more range in them.

Yeah, say it's for an ae92 corolla.
They are usually in the style of say: ae92 toyota corolla ---> pioneer/jvc/panasonic or whatever.
Just talk to them, they'll be able to help you.
