AE86 Strut to variations???

Hey all,
Was Putting new shocks in yesterday and noticed something odd. I've had a set of jap spec struts sitting in the garage for a couple of years that i'm using the brakes off. Any way i was looking at the strut tops and comparing them to the aus versions.
On my original struts the top of the strut is located at the front of the oval hole in the strut tower. But if i put the jap spec ones in it locates the strut top at the rear of this hole.
Why would these be different? And what differences would these locations give?
Cheers.

maybeye one set of struts was off a car with power steering, cars with power steering generally run more caster than thoe without, i think.
so yours wouldn't have it, but the jap one might have. also the steering arm bit would be shorter on the jap one, giving you quicker, more lock more effort more rubbing tyres on gaurds steering. measure it, i may be right.
