driving along and there was this wagon with "4wd Corolla" on it.
how come these havent been the basis of mad engine swaps? drive train too weak or something? or just cause its a wagon...

My opinion, but the Tercel is a pretty unattractive vehicle.

Yeah, no offense to the corolla boys but they are THE ugliest corolla ever! Also the drive train is apparently really weak...

Can't handle a GZE so ppl don't bother I guess.

Cheers

The Tercell, later known as the Corolla 4WD isnt a great basis for engine swaps or drive train upgrades due to its design. Celica 4WD or Subaru setups for example, have 3 diffs, center front and rear. The Corolla 4WD only has two, front and rear. The rear being driven through the front diff. This design is ok around town, but not brilliant for tuning. Also, the Corolla 4WD drive train was never designed to take more power than what the standard engine (4A-C and 4A-FE from memory) could put out. Thats why for rallying in the 90's the Corolla WRC had Celica GT4 engine and drive train shoe horned into a Corolla body.

Also, the early versions of the Tercell (and some later, but i'm a bit foggy on which ones) has a leaf spring rear, later models had indipendant rear.

Even with thte indipendant rear end, it would require some extreme floor pan and chassis mods to get the 4WD system into anything other than the wagon it came in.

The Max Ellerey Corolla/Nova book has some good diagrams that out line the differences in chassis and gearbox.

Craig.

I've thought some on this..

forget the tercel.. it would have to be the later SR-5.
Its not the most attractive car but it could be cool in a shaggin wagon kind of way.

You wedge a GT-4 engine and box into it east west(i would suspect this is possible as there are AE-82's with the same setup albeit the tailshaft outlet for rear drive is blocked)
the 4a-fe in the SR-5 is east-west standard (i think the older tercel has a north-south setup)

Then you either modify a GT-4 rear dif to fit or use any old diff as long as the ratio is the same. I had a look under one and the rear dif looked a damn sight like the diff in my sprinter... perhaps a hilux diff with a suitable ratio could work.

A custom tailshaft and your away.

Of course this all rests on if the GT-4 box rear shaft outlet has the nessasary slipping mechanism needed for driving on tarmac.. or else something would have to be fabricated and placed on the tailshaft at some point...

I suspect the reason it hasnt been done is it means big dollars.. and in the end your will have a car which looks like a SR-5.. and not a tough Sprinter

I thought about this a number of years ago and came to the conclusion that if I was going to spend the big dollars i may as well try to transplant the GT4 running gear and engine into a AE82 Corolla sedan and have a real street sleeper!

So far as i know, both the Tercell and SR5 were east-west mounted 4A engines. I didnt realise the SR5 had the 4A-GE. Interesting.

As for a 4wd wagon, personaly I'd go for a Subaru Sports Wagon. With a lift kit! Speaking of which, i have sen an SR5 around Adelaide with what looked like a lift kit in it! Was i seeing things, or has some one else seen this car around?

Craig.

GT4 in a SR5 would be the ultimate sleeper
