Temperature gauge/ sender playing funny buggers? Mon, 25 April 2005 07:17 Go to next message
i have some issues with my temperature gauge...

i notice the gauge goes up very fast from 0' (this is an sa63 dash) thats acceptable i think...
i bought a brand new switch for the thermos - 85"C it switches on, 80 off.

Whilst testing this the other day, i noticed the car getting over 1/2,and no fans running... so i shut it down, i soon later went back to see how far it had crept and if the fans had cut in. the gauge was at about 75% and the fans were going. surely 85"c isnt 75% of a celica gauge?

I'm pretty sure the sender for the temp in it is either out of a mx62 cressida or a sv21 camry. So i go off to the wreckers today and look for some senders. I found a celica one (ra60) which shares the same dash. I bought this home and then boiled some water to test it. Fresh boiled water in the kettle had the needle up to about 40-45% of the gauge. I havent installed it on the car, as im confused as hell if its going to make any difference...

Help please?!

Thanks
Blake

Wait, what sender are you using currently? If it's a ford sender it might not read correctly with the toyota gauge. They do after all act differently.

Tested it in the same way you did with the RA60 item?

I just have a feeling that they differ somehow between the camry/cressi and the celica/supra

Hmmm I recall seeing a toyota manual that they hand out to the mechanics - that may have some info in it? I'll see if I can find it tonight.

u should be using a standard one to match your dash. which it sounds like u are. we didf work on a ute with a 350 chev and everything we did we could not find out why the car was playing funny buggers and gertting real. turns out its from the way it was designed and built its just a hot engine. prolly find all your issues will be engine related. the best thing to do is get it up to running temp and use a temp gun. if u dont have one ill see if i can bring the one home from work. that will tell u the temps everywhere when its runningh in relation to what your gauges are saying.

even on that last statement ben, doesnt explain why the gauge got to 75% before reaching ~85"C
