question about modifying a strut. Tue, 26 April 2005 07:19 Go to next message
if i were to shorten a strut ABOVE the spring saddle but leave the saddle in the same place untouched, and also used the same spring, would the ride height drop, raise or stay the same?
thanks.

You know you will need smaller strut inserts?
Smaller struts mean less travel?

Anyway, it would remain the same.

If the spring is the same, and the cars weight is the same, the spring will compress the same amount, regardless of strut insert.

The only way to lower it without changing springs, is to lower the lower spring perch.

the only reason i ask is i have an XT130 strut in my sprinter, which is a few centimetres longer than the sprinters. therefor i added a spacer under the shock insert.
i just want to know if i cut the top of the strut to the same length as the sprinters and retap the top, will the ride HEIGHT change. because if the spring seat is the same distance up the strut, theoretically the suspension and its travel would be the same as original.

Ride height will be the same... you havnt moved the spring seat which is what sets the height.

ok thats good to hear. so in theory i should have the car handling the way it did before the longer struts apart from the added unsprung mass of the heavier hilux calipers.

thats brings me to my next question, can the top of the strut be re-threaded? there isnt much metal to work with i know but its gotta be better than cutting and shutting the strut right?
