How hot does a turbo heat bag get Wed, 27 April 2005 02:02 Go to next message
Hi y'all,

It may be a stupid question, but I was just wondering how hot does the outside of a turbo heat bag get?
The reason I ask is that with my conversion, I have ended up with about an inch between the exhaust side of the turbo and the firewall. Great for weight distribution, crap for heat issues.

I've wrapped up the vapour/pressure lines with some heat proof bandage and left the factory heat proofing in place.

Also made a couple of stainless heatshields. Only one is pictured, the other overlaps and covers the rest of the firewall and down over the 4ag oil cooler to level with the chassis rail.

I cannot fit the factory heatshield on as it wraps around the front of the turbo and hangs out a little. But what I was thinking was cutting off where it wraps (so it effectively just covers the manifold and installing the turbo bag I have over the turbo. The problem with this is that it's quite bulky and it would be touching the stainless heat shield.

Will the engineer freak out about this because I don't have my required centimetre and a half?
And will the outside of the turbo bag be too hot and transfer too much heat directly to the heatshield?

Cheers,
Dave

Not too hot, you can touch it without getting burnt even if the exhaust housing inside is glowing red.

Are these specs for the same area? one inch = 25mm > 15mm

ke382TG: thanks, that was the news I was hoping for.

clubagreenie: sorry, think you misunderstood me. An inch (approx 25mm) is the room I have between the exhaust housing on the turbo and the firewall.
15mm is how much space I heard I have to have beteen the engine and the firewall to pass engineering (don't ask me where I heard it though).

I was worried that if I filled that one inch of space that I had with a turbo bag, I would not pass engineering.

take it off, get it engineered, then put it back on, thats if he doesnt like it, not really a problem considering its not a part that will stop movement, its a piece of cloth basically

With the amount of space I have to work with, taking it off is a day long job Confused

Anyways, here is the finished result. I'm happy with the heat protection, fingers crossed the engineer doesn't nail me for the space.

If I do get made to move it, I think I'm just going to recess the firewall. Less effort than re-positioning the motor and keeps the nicer weight distribution.
