what goes into a high hp lightly gone over 4agte Mon, 18 November 2002 11:05 Go to next message
just thought id tell you abit about what goes into making a very high horsepower 4gte{from a gze motor}.
started by stripping the motor again{only rebuilt it 40k ago} just to make sure everything is running how it should be. clean and debured block of all dags{especially the bottom of the oil returns}with die grinder plus other race prep things. then clean every part to a nice shine. stip down the oil pump and modify it a bit, but this is only for a awhile as i have a three stage dry sump pump on its way from the states.had every thing balanced with the exedy ceramic button clutch. the block is o-ringed so had a recieve machined into head, while i wait for the billet cams and buckets then drilled and tapped a drain in back of head in a similar place to the small port as i tossed the small port head. dummy fitted crank to check clearances of new bearings. fitted ARP rod bolts and fitted crank make sure of end float{there a trick to it}. fitted arp main cap bolts and torqued. then checked ring gap clearances and fitted piston and torqued rod bolts. then welded two fittings to sump, one a dash 8 for turbo oil retun and one for oil temp. then welded dash 12{from memory} to rear of water pump housing so i can run braided hose instead of factory solid water pipe and to suit the billet inline thermostat housing that is o-ringed and held closed with ten cap screws. this has a high flow race thermostat in it to keep things cool. made one of our trick catch cans for the two rocker cover breathers. put ARP stub bolts in ready for the head and aneiled copper head gasket. fitted dash fitting were oil sender used to be to feed turbo and got rid of the water bleed beside it and replaced it with cap plug. made a set of slide ajustable vernier pulleys. worked out were to put the header tank for the cooling system. made a short shifter by heating and raising the pivot point then made a space block with t7{haha bit over board but it was the closes piece at hand}. machined two brake mounting brackets out of t7 for the outlaw four spot race caliper for the rolla shopping trolley.
and this is just some of the work that goes into it. still going it takes awhile even with a race workshop.

p.s just started making stainless turbo manifold, im making a jig so will make them when ordered but they wont be cheap.
p.p.s my budget is still under $500! haha just kidding

no dont do the brake setups on street cars as the insurance hasles are a nightmare.
and the turbo manifold is going in a ae93 and would be about $1300 as a guess as i can tell you till its finish and work out labour and materials.

Hehe, I bet you wouldn't put up a corresponding pricelist!

One thing though, I don't get this bit.....

What about adjustable cam gears? wont they help you dial in the cams for peak performance? or did you just forget to list them?

wish i got to have a few beers! seems to be no time for it lately{and before someone says make time, i wish i could!!}.
best way to describe moving the pivot point up is to grab a pen and start at the middle of it with a finger and thumb holding it and move it back and forth. as you go up you have to move the pen less to make the bottom travel the same distance.

I understand how a quickshifter works, & what a pivot point is (I made my own quickshifter for the same 'box) I just don't understand how you can "heat & raise" the pivot point.
I had to cut mine, then weld in an extra peice of rod to make it longer. If there's an easier way to do it though, I've love to hear it.

the ae92 is front drive so has a remote shifter. the shifter pivots on a metal ball that is heated and or pressed on over splines. if you heat it you can put it in a vice and wack it and move the ball up. sorry didnt think to say on an ae92 ect.

Ah, thanks mate. I wondered if it was FWD but then assumed it was RWD when I saw you were sourcing busted T50s.
I don't suppose you wanna take a few pics of the shifter & give a bit of a how to description for the article section do you? I was saying to Rolla Boy it couldn't be too hard to make a quickshifter for a FWD, but I wasn't exactly sure how a FWD shifter assembly worked.
