Well, I picked up the old 'Rolla yesterday. I ended up swapping in a remanufactured 4AC. The new engine certainly has more compression and is a lot quieter than the old 4A!!

The only problem I have noticed is that the car vibrates at idle speeds. This is especially bad when you are taking off because it causes the car to shudder.

Is this just a case of the idle being set too low or is it something to do with the new engine?

Any help appreciated, as always.

Thanks

Acording to the various manuals i have, idle for the 4A-C should be around the 800 to 900 mark.

Try that and see how it goes!

my idle is at 850 but it jumps all over the place, as low as 600 and up to 950-1000. I run it on premium and have the timing advanced about 6-7degrees and sitting at traffic lights can be a pain, car shakes a lot. jump on the go pedal get the idle over 1100 and its fine Smile remember it is a small 4 cycl so the idle vibration could just be coz thats how it is if u want u could set the idle up a little higher there is a big knob on the back of the carby on the passenger side just turn it a little bit till the revs rise a bit, u may need to take of the air cleaner to get to it tho

cheers

Thanks guys. Problem is that I don't have a tacho, so I can't properly estimate what it is idling at Rolling Eyes

I can't quite put my finger on it, but something just doesn't seem right. The car is a bit 'jerky' when I take off and it vibrates at cruising speed - kinda like the wheels are out of balance, but they were fine before the transplant!

Also seems to jerk when I accelerate or brake. I wonder if I'm missing an engine mount or something?

The damn towtruck guy left the hand brake on when it was towed (by the front wheels) to the mechanic. Could these things be symptoms of worn out rear (drum) brakes?

Thanks again.

As a precaution, I'd be pulling the drums off the rear and taking a look at the brake shoes. It doesnt sound like it would be the problem you describe, but worth a look!
