Hi all. I currently have a 25wx4 amp running through an active crossover, which works fine. Bought an Alpine 3555 (50w x 4) off ebay a month ago to upgrade it, finally got around to wiring it up today.

It sounds very hissy/distorted/quiet Sad. I can't figure it out. I took out the fuse on my hot line from the battery before connecting it up, so I don't see how I could have hurt it, and the old amp still works when i swap it back in.

Just wondering if anyone with a bit of amp knowledge has any ideas. Hope I didn't buy a dud Sad

thanks for replying. I wish i'd tested it straight away when i got it, but the way I had my amp installed meant I couldn't test out the next one without rewiring. Will have another look at it tommorow - hopefully an just ground point is broken or something.

you may also wanna check that you did not cross the RCA leads and the power leads, as this eill create distortion in the amplifier due to the energy field radiated by the power cable that effects the low power rca signals. but in how you explained it, it sounds a bit worse than just this, but give it a go and see what happens.
BEST OF LUCK

Put the amp on the bench, hook it up to a car battery, CD player and some speakers, see wha it sounds like... if it still sounds horrible, then its time to pull the lid off and have a play/give it to someone that knows how to do so...

Thanks all for your help. I think it's fixed!!!

I took the lid off, couldn't see anything suss, ao decided to wire it up in the car again. This time i took out the crossover and went straight from headunit --> amp. Worked beautifully. I have no idea what the problem was before - perhaps somehting funny is happening with the crossover that one amp doesn't care about and the other one does (+/- out of phase??)

I will tell you what happens when I connect up the crossover again, but for now i am happy my amp is not stuffed! thanks again
