OIL CATCH CAN --- WHAT SHOULD I USE AS FILTER

hey guys i just bought a oil catch can off ebay , but as i suspected when i got the can and opened it the inside was empty isnt there supposed to be a filtering medium like foam or something to trap the oil in the can
now the question is what should i use inside the can to trap the blow by oil
im thinking of steel wool, any other options
or should i just plug it in without any filter medium
this will be going on a gz20 soarer
cheers guys

why do you need an oil catch can for unless ure engine is fuct and has massive blow by?
I wouldn't be using steel wool..
it won't filter anything. and it will just get all rusty and shitty.

Just let the shit collect in the can and tip it out from time to time.
Only reason to filter it would be if you are setting it up to drain back to the sump.

I don't know about catch cans, but I wasn't aware they had any medium in them at all. I thought the the crap just splattered on the side
I don't think steel wool would be bad though (like scourer style, not steel wool 'soap pad' style. It would have zero chance of rusting with the oil coating it would get.

thanks boys and yeah catchcan in the engine bay doesnt mean the engine is fuckd every turbo car will have some amount of blowby and im fititng anew intercooler soon , so i dont have to explain any more
so steel wool is the way to go then , how about some sort of foam ,
also will the pressure in there be too high so as to suck the steel wool back into the engine
having nothing in the can would be useless me thinks as the same air will be sucked back into the engine without having the oil seperated
there has to be some sort of oil/air seperator medium in the can
thats why its called oil-air seperator

mine has a plate in it the oil hits the plate and goes down but is sealed and doesnt go back to sump
was made by BTR fabrication in adelaide for $120
i recommend cleaning the catch can before fitting it and forget about the filter. The only thing in the catch can should be clean oil.

You can get proper stainless mesh from truck shops which is what they use to filet oil out of there tapper cover breathers for example a mercedes 906LA motor runs one.

nice might do that mine has a outlet under the bottom which i now have figured out that it s for draining back to the sump , but i think i will block it and let the oil stay in the can
so i got to find myself a nice steel plate to fit in the catch can now
one more q ,,,,, wont the oil be pushed up the catch can due to the pressure and come out the outlet and back into the air inlet
cheers

when i made my ghetto PVC catch can i put stainless steel scourers in it. (IMO steel wool could break up and if running a plumback style catch would maybe suck the shit into the intake).

it's either a puke can for really bad problems, or a catch can for blowby problems you can live with.
if gravity doesn't work for you, i'd use some screen, or that lump of compressed metal mesh that's used on some lawnmower air filters.

|
how does it cause detonation?

Oil is a crude fuel like diesel, diesel its only a finer oil if your running you engine with high boost or if your engine is on it limits theres not much room for other foreign substances to be entering your compression. IE how does a diesel run? On compression and heat, diesel is oil, oil combusted under heat and pressure sump oil will explode in your cylinders before spark just like diesel. Hope this explains it.

added oil via blow by mixes t olower octane ratings....hence some high tuned motors need all the octane they can get hence may detonate.
