I was working on my car and i can't be exactly sure with what i heard on the radio but i thought i heard a car add where it was saying a certain model of Honda has a F1 inspired 7 speed auto gearbox, anyone know if there is such a car?
what benifits would you get from having a 7 speed auto? i'd find it a pain in the arse as it would constantly going in and out of gears all the time,

I read somewhere recently about some new car coming out (some car we know & recognise, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a honda) with a 6 speed auto or a 5 speed manual. I thought a 6 speed auto was a bit funny......
But I can see how it'd be better, the engine wouldn't have to work as hard 'cos it would have more gears to work through, we don't have to bother shifting it. I bet the box is working its ass off though.
Although I guess this would be where the new technology was used to make the auto more efficiant & produce less heat/waste less energy for a given amount of work. Then the bugger can work a bit harder!

I read an article in a car mag ages ago about this custom designed/built supercar by this gut called Koensegge (pronunced kings edge) with this 8 litre supercharged V8, gull wing doors, outrageous bodywork and all, driven by directing 920HP to the rear wheels through an 8-speed auto 'box!! Not available for retail. I shit you not.

well i thought they said 7 and thought they said honda but like i said i can't be sure, just when i drive an auto i find it a pain in the arse going up hills and so forth with how they sometimes can't decide what gear they want to be in and keep on up shifting and downshifting, but i guess that might be reduced a little as with that many gears the ratio's would be much closer together so you wouldn't notice as big a difference when it up and down shifts.
anyway what am i talking about i have no mechanicle knoledge of auto gear boxes, still puzzled in how they actually work, wouldn't mind getting one to pull apart and check out.

I have no problems. Turn off overdrive, and keep the car in either 2nd or 3rd, (it's all about the accelerator). Takes a little practice, which I have everyday, but can be done. My auto only shifts when I want it to. Yea, I leave it in drive too.
The actual mechanics of it can be found at www.howstuffworks.com pretty interesting stuff. After seeing that, I'm really curious to how a 7 geared auto works.

Sorry to change direction of the thread, but while we're on about auto boxes, does anyone who has 'ECT Power' (as well as O/D) ever turn it off? I don't think mines been off in over a year...
GIN51E- If you give it hell, that way there's no higher gear to change to (coming from someone who drives up tamborine mountain every day at 6,000 rpm)

that sites pretty good, now i know how a torque converter works and thats very interesting, so if it has no fluid then the car will not move.
but it does make me start wondering how much power is actually lost in this process and how different oil grades and fin designs would affect power transfer as well.

Yea, I like it too.
Yea, the fluid is pretty much a #1 issue when people say they have problems with gears engaging and stuff, the first question is about their fluid level, 99% of the time they don't have enough and just a top up or change fixes it. AFAIK, there is only one grade, 'auto transmission fluid'. Sure there would be some sort of loss, it's a hydraulic process, not a straight engine to gearbox deal. Actually, I don't think it's really a loss though, it just needs a little more power to get the output. That's why auto's are a little more thirsty.

Yea, a couple of months ago I decided to turn mine on permanently after reading about it and doing a few road tests with it. All it does is changes the gears later than they normally would when you give it some, (revs it out further). Otherwise the gears change normally. I actually did notice a peformance difference when I floored it between ECT being off or on. It wasn't a "feeling" like a rice cat-back exhaust, it was actually noticable. So in that case, I see no harm in leaving the ECT on. Plus I have a cool green ECT PWR lit up on the dash all the time.

Yep, it's all about the accelerator. Just keep it in the "power band" for the gear and it won't change. If you feel it's starting to loose power and about to change into a higher gear, put the foot down more. (Going up hills of course). But it shits me when I'm behind someone and 99% of the time they always slow down going up hills because they don't give it some extra gas to keep to the speed limit like I do.
It's either they have an auto and let it try and pull the car up in a higher gear, or they have a manual and just CBF changing gears.
