Undoing crank pulley bolt?? Sat, 30 April 2005 13:04 Go to next message
IS the method of putting it in gear (5th) and putting the handbrake on (RWD car) a good method of undoing this bolt? Is it possible to stuff your gearbox, i.e. if the crank spins while it is in gear.
I know you can use the crank starter for split second but would rather try the 1st method...but don't want to hurt anything

Thanks

best way mate keep the car level on the ground all four wheel use5th and grab a rattle gun and rattle it out .. if you dont have one go down to your local mechanic ask him to loosen it with his gun but not to much so you can drive it home and finish it off with th rachet. but good luck pulling the harmonic off afta the bolt comes out!

do not drive your car home with a loose main pulley, lucky for you your local mechanic will just laugh at you if you ask him to do this, and then not do it.

i'd use the starter, after ensuring it will spin the right way, or by kicking a breaker bar in the method you mention.

there is no way it will damage your gearbox, as at the worst you will get clutch slip, which you get all the time anyway.

heh heh the number of times i've undone my pulley accidentally after leaving a spanner on it.... sheesh..

i'd go breaker bar and socket, with a few fast taps with lump hammer (ie get some inertia going)...

Would the clutch slip before it broke the gearbox? So no chance of damage using 1st technique

So oldcorollas would you recommend putting it in gear and handbrake on then try and get it with long breaker bar...??

Thanks guys

of sourse it would, how many times have you broken a gearbox while driving? not many? thought so.

just buy a two dollar air compressor and a two dollar rattle gun from supercheap, they should last long enough to undo one bolt.

hmm i cracked mine the other night (engine out for rebuild, shove timber block inbetween block and crank was my solution) and then tried to remove the pulley. a mecaninic mate said to "just hit it" with a hammer but after a few taps i decided i wasent to keen on that idea. i suppose i need a puller of some description? (engine is 4age)
