Hey all,
i spun a bearing in my 4agze.. Badly i might add, will have pics soon.
just wanted to get a gerenal concencus on what i should concerntrate on when rebuild it..
-what should i replace?
-what aftermarket parts should i use?
-what should i re-engineer for strength?
basically.. the car will be turbo'd soon.. so im using this chance to build the engine up solid so it will drive np for the next few years will boost levels around the 15psi mark..
im planning on spending around $2000 - $2500
thats including the $1000 to take it out and take it down.. put it together and put it back in..
so around $1000-1500 in parts and reparing...
ive also been told that a 20V crank will be a god investment in my 4agze because the are better balanced etc..?? and truth to this?
any feedback is greatly apprciated people.. thanks in advanced for all your help.

hey man.
i did exactly the same thing in my GZE. spun two main bearing.
took the engine out and stripped it myself. took all the gear to our machine shop we use.
- tunnel bored rods and mains +10 thou oversize
- balanced all engine components
- supplied oversize beaings and new rings
- decked the block
- valve cut
- chemical clean
- honed bores
other stuff i cant remember. anyways, came to bout $1300
good quality. now i just have to rebuild it!
a genuine gasket set from toyota was $420 and new oil pump was $200. im using a HKS head gasket tho.
i am using all ARP studs to. thats pretty expensive but a good investment.

add at least a new set of pistons to the above list (plenty of good reports with the factory GZE offerings).
I would count on a slightly higher cost (allow yourself a greater margin).

what these terms mean.. im unfamiliar with those terms..
also..will i really need a new oil pump though??
was planing on replacing all gaskets (head, cam cover etc) with either toyota or aftermarket ones, i do have a davis criag 80L/min water pump to add as well..
so my target of $1500 to spend is about right?? hopefully the head is fine along with the pistons and wont need repair...since the car actually still runs but doesnt sound great.. the block will be fully stripped down..
the fact that the car is at a Race Development workshop is a little re-assuring.. some of there rally and race cars there are pretty sweet..

tunnel bore means u make the area where the bearings go bigger, so, dont do they unless u have damaged the tunnel,
deck the block is like shaving the head, but u do the block instead
valve cut is like lapping in the valve seats, it ensures a perfect combustion chamber seal
honed bores mean u get a "honer" and u smooth out the bore {where the pistons go}
1 i'd strip it, take it down to them, get them to bath it and do a quote for u,
2 but definately grind the crank {mains and big ends},
3 re-size the rods,
4 i'd get the block bored and honed {it may not need it},
5 get it decked,
6 rebuild the oil pump,
7 new welsh plugs {thats a given},
8 get the valves k-lined {if needed} and get the seats cut, if the seats need to be cut then they will have to do the valve lash, so maybe spend that little bit more and get the cams re-ground
9 if the head needs to be rebuilt, then maybe get it ported while its apart, will be cheaper to do when its apart.
we dont have problems with aftermarket gaskets so maybe u'd be able to save money there
use king bearings, we never have problems with them
what workshop is it getting done at

Bryce Racing Developments in ashmore/southport on the gold coast
if anyone has heard of them.. they seem ok juding by the race cars there...dont think he's done 4agze work before.. have to ask him..but he said they just moved there..
he did say that it'll cost $500 to take the engine down.. and $500 to get it back in and running again (fluids, sparks etc)
IF NEED BE...i can settle a deal with him for the work he's already done taking the bottom end bearings out.. and the amount of time it been on his only hydro hoist and get a mate with a car trailer to take it somewhere else.. where i will get a good deal.
any suggestions..

my work does good jobs, redlands engines 10 smith street capalaba
or bryants engineering at coorparoo
or Performance wholesale parramatta st slacks creek
or Jack Bros in gunn st underwood
last 3 are mostly performance orientated, dont be fooled ny the lack lustre appearance of the jack bros shop, extremely high quality work
just remember, u get what u paid for
