icon9.gif  Wierd Rattling Noise..... Mon, 02 May 2005 13:20 Go to next message
OK car didn't seem to have this noise when I took it for a test drive, but now that I've owned it for 2 weeks I'm starting to get to know all the noises in my car....

I'll just point out I've got the V161 g/box in my JZA80.

Anyway lets say I'm driving along in 4th, doing 60, lets say I then pushed on the accel. pedal a little bit, I would hear a slight rattle coming from what appears to be the front left of the car, nothing too loud though, but it's hard to tell while driving , if I planted the accel. pedal this noise is really loud and kinda un-nerving...car doesn't loose power or any performance though...

But if I was doing 60 still and drop a gear, we'll say 3rd in this example and floor it, no wierd noises and car still drives fine.

Noise occurs for 3,4,5 & 6th. Noise can also occur when backing off the throttle. It also seems worse once the car has warmed up.

My thought's were some loose bolts on the exhuast manifold heat shield or something, but nothing "appears" to be loose, are V161's just noisy or...cause I've heard they can sound like a "bag of ball bearings" to quote a someone? Any suggestions ideas would be appreciated. I'm going to take my car to the mech. this week, but I'd like to see if I could suss it out before then.

Either something is loose somewhere, or my G/B isn't too healthy. Any ideas as to what this could be?

Broken engine mount maybe?
inlet manifold sits just under strut brace and when you accl the engine lifts the lh side and rubs brace.
just an idea.

obviously your car is making the noise under load, and i would assume its the gearbox, since you said it happens when decelerating...

maybe try draining the fluid and inspecting it?

assuming its turbo... could it possibly be one of the turbos? (yes, i am asking you a question ahhaha)

im all out of ideas, aside from the worn mount...

Eldar.O.

edit: under 20 seconds of work and i realise that its non turbo and your on your green p's, im so so envious Embarassed

but yeah... i dunno lol

Hey buddy,
I've got a 4AC powered AE82 and I experience the same problems.

I've figured out though that it depends on my revs and how I accelerate.
For example, if I let the gear rev higher than usual and then change the likelyhood of this happening is alot less.
It also seems to happen when I change at lowish revs (around 2,500) and then push the accelerator all the way in (floor it).
However if I put my foot on the accelerator and gradually increase the throttle (like I'm supposed to) then I don't have the problem anymore.
Normally it's okay but when you're turning onto a main road I need to floor it because the 4ac isn't exactly the best engine around and it's frustrating to hear the rattling noise.
I sort of lose power though. While it rattles it seems to be that the car is maintaining it's speed but revving more. That's what I mean by sort of. I'm not losing power (slowing down) but I'm not moving any faster either, it's just revving more.

Try changing at higher revs and after changing try and gradually push down the accelerator and see if it's any different.

My knowledge of cars is very limited, hope that helped in any way.

My wild guess is that you are getting a sympathethic harmonic resonance at certain times/conditins as you are driving the car.
I had a rattle at certain speeds in my RA23, could never find it when it was parked/static.
Jacked it up solidly on all four wheels at one end of a large empty car park, had a volunteer sitting in the car ready to kill it if things went wrong..... and gentley changed gears and played with the throttle until the rattle appearred.....and sure enough it was the top half of a Boge shock on the rear.....ratttling against the lower section. I don't recommend testing this way, but I found my problem when thousands could not.

Thanks for replies guys.

Thu, I've adjusted my driving style to make the noise basically non-existant, but I'd like to have whatever needs tightening, well, tightned or replaced Smile

Eldar, only a 2JZ-GE I'm affraid, TT next time Smile

I'm hoping it's just something loose, an engine mount or g/box problems would be annoying and slightly expensive Confused
