Stupidest engine that could fit in a sprinter legally ? Wed, 20 November 2002 06:56 Go to next message
Hey all,

One of my friends is going to do something silly with a sprinter. I said I knew just the place to ask some knowledgable rev heds, hehehe, right here.

The idea of a 1jz has pretty much been thrown out due to it not really fitting, plus probably being entirely illegal.

What about a 3sgte ? maybe even a rotary or something like that ? All ideas welcome.

What do you guys think ?

Thanks for any help,
Mat.

Stupidest engine you could legally fit...that would have to be a 1X Starfire motor.

Haha, nice one GT... Razz

Depending on which state you are in, a 1UZFE may be legal, also more likely to fit than any of the big sixes...without modification anyway.

If you are in NSW or Qld, it depends on the weight of the original car (not what it actually weighs, but the figure quoted by the manufacturer). You multiply that figure by 3, and that's the largest engine you can legally fit; so for a 1000kg car, you can have an engine up to 3000cc. For turbo/supercharged engines the multiplication factor is 2.5, so you could have a 2500cc turbo engine.

Does anyone know the official weight of an AE86? I'm guessing it's under 1000kg so a 1JZ-GTE wouldn't be legal, but a 3S-GTE would.

norbie, is that x3 rule only for modified cars?

i guess it's not really relevant here, but it's just the LS1 5.7 in a 1600kg car doesn't workout legal- is there something i've missed? Confused

Hey guys,
the rules change at 1100kgs...
from there its 4.82x the mass for N/A
and 4x for forced

however if your lucky enough to have some thing with a real chassis eg. Hilux

the numbers are differnt again
they are :
5.46x for N/A
and 4.68 for Forced

This means in my 1690kg Fairlane i can twin turbo the 5.8l V8 no worries Smile
or i can go for a big block (7.5L) no worries, but i cant blow the big block Sad

cam I think you'll find that thoughs multipliers work for cars originally fitted with a 6 or 8 cylinder.
but for cars with 4's it's 3x or 2.5 for turbo.. it's all on the rta homepage

As has already been hinted at here, if you go to thr trouble of making your AE86 a full chassis car (like a utility, ie not unitary) then you can put a much larger engine in.

The thing to remember is that the RTA white papers are guidelines, you can go outside side them if you want to. There is a catch.

You HAVE to have an engineers certificate. I have been trying to get a full set of the ADRs on cd-rom from the ADR subscription service - they seem to do things in their own time/way

my friend has an ae86 with a 1uz living in the engine bay. not yet operational, but all the engine mounts are done, the exhaust is being made, and the diff is mostly sorted (7.5" crown)

we have the ecu & wiring, just need to sort out the front brakes (funny about that) and do some strengthening of the chassis.

then it will be out terrorising the streets.....

in japan 2jzt and 20b turbo have been done.

i thought its based more on engine capacity of the original motor.... but anyway....

didnt the laws change sometime recently? and saying u HAVE TO have an eng. cert., that means or an engine swap? or engine increase? or what?

My old AE86 rego papers states the weight as 920kg. The car actually weighed 1035kg. I believe the rules are that the RTA takes the weight of the vehicle with the largest engine option but without options such as air con, tow bar etc.

cam.. you were right.. 4 cylinders & rotaries under 1100kg have a 2.5xturbo and 3xna.. 4 cylinders & rotaries over 1100kg and all other cars(sixes and 8's etc)get a 4.82xNA and 4xturbo... not bad... so a 1500kg car can put a 7230cc(7.2L) NA engine or 6000cc(6L) wow not bad..
