rwd 4age alternator - help?
|

hi,
just installed a rwd 4age in my sprinter - it came with an alternator similar to my 4ac one (engine was last in a ke70 I think), has a bracket that goes on the exhaust side of the engine.
Only problem is there is nowhere to bolt the top alternator mount to on the engine.
I am thinking I will have to make a custom mount for the adjustment bar to bolt to - surely someone else here has had this problem before?
Will an alternator and mount from a fwd 4age fit my engine? anyone got anything suitable for sale in melbourne?
Cheers.

The FWD alternators and brackets fit fine. Much easier to use one of these!

i had a look at my friends sprinter with a smallport 4age - his alternator is mounted on the intake side... and the top mount bolts near the water pump - mine doesn't have the same bolt hole i'm sure.
if anyone can take a pic of where their altenator adjustment bar mounts to their engine, and post it up for me I would be very greatful!
thanks

what you have there is someone has been dodgy and used a 4A-C alternator.
ALL 4A-GE 16V alternators mount on the intake side (except for gze's), and the top adjusting bracket mounts to the top radiator outlet which is mounted to the head.
I would recommend getting the correct alternator if you can, they are a far superior unit to the 4A-C one... but remember the 4ac alternator is EXTERNALLY regulated, and the 4age is INTERNALLY regulated.

i used a custom bracket and mounted mine low on the exhaust side - for all the hassle i'd recommend using a FWD setup.

here is a couple of pics of what i did to help. Dont worry about the aftermarket fuse box, that was me being silly
This is to guide with wiring the PROPER internally regulated 4age alternator.
# unplug and remove external voltage reg. located on passenger strut tower.
# get 6 pin plug to suit from supercheap auto
# run all the wires from the alternator on the intake side over the engine and to the 4ac alternator power wire and the now loose voltage reg plug.
# run the power cable over the motor and connect the power of the 4age alt. to the power cable that was connected to the 4ac alternator.
# with a multimeter, test these wires on the 6 pin voltage reg plug
-> ignition: connect this to the IG wire from the 4age alt.
-> battery: connect to the "S" wire from 4age alt
-> warning light: this should be a yellow/white wire. connect to "L" on 4age alt.
# Make a matching version of the 6 pin plug to connect these 3 wires together coming from the 4age alt and connecting to the 6 pin voltage reg plug.
DONE!

thanks for replies...
i don't think my top radiator water outlet has the hole for the top alternator bracket... this is my problem -
who has an actual "rwd" 4age - and how is the alternator mounted?
thanks for the internally regulated alternator guide the witzl!
Cheers

i have
the alt bolts onto the bracket and nothing else
the hole for the adjuster is on the bracket at the top
try to source one as making ur own bracket can lead to problems if it isnt 100%, if your belt is even slightly out of alignment ull more then likely get belt squeel

yeah anyone who regularily goes to the meetings can attest to my belt squeal due to missaligned pulleys. its REALLY loud and gets alot of attention
just gotta get around to getting a spacer machined up for the water pump, its just hard to get an acurate measurement of the thickness required.

the fwd alternator mount is on the top water outlet... i could bolt the fwd one onto my rwd motor, but then i would need the remote thermo housing... which i don't want.
i rigged something dodgy up... 4ac mount, some other alternator, really low ehaust side... top alternator mount is below alternator to the block with a mount made out of an angle grinder black changing tool.... don't ask.
