RA-60 HELP Wed, 20 November 2002 15:59 Go to next message
Hi, i just bought an 1981 model RA60 celica liftback as my 1st car , it's straight as and once i do a few adjustments - it needs a new clutch , aerial , and some mouldings and a dash ( what can you expect for $900?) but it goes fine - when the clutch goes in anyway... it's as good as new. i was just wondering what are the best and most cost effective ways of increasing the speed of the car??... and if there are any particular problems to look out for. thankyou.

Also, I've heard that the timing chain tensioner is a source of problems... Happened to me... So if you hear a tapping from the front end get it fixed!

As for extra speed, save up for a 1G-GTE. The 21R-C is only good as a boat anchor.

Amen, I own a 1981 RA60...the 21R-C is a boat anchor Smile Do yourself a favour and wind a bit of timing into it, and run it on 98RON fuel. Makes it feel nicer and hopefully you can also get some better fuel economy out of it...

The tailgate is a killer and usually disintegrates...keep an eye on it. Take the panel off on the hatch and see underneath it.

hey dudes thought i may as well my 2 cents, i usually do anyway Very Happy

any r series motor is a shocker for timing chains, they eat through them like Mr T in a mardi gras

get a stronger clutch when you replace it, spend a few extra bucks and have a decent clutch that dosnt slip until it is absoloutly stuffed no other time and also one that last longer, im using a rpm heavy duty centreforce II i think it was around $600, but ive flogged the crap out of it and it lasted all through when i had the motor 'souped up' a bit

if you can find a supra interior in nice condition get it, they are getting long in the tooth and fit straight into your celica, they are way much nicer and sleeker

and get rid of the 21rc they are useless even as boat anchors
