brake pads free balling?

I've just put my pads in the R33 calipers, and they seem to be awfully free in their movement.... I mean, sure they're only secured by the 2 retaining pins, but they're flopping all over the place... is this normal?
(I should mention there are no shims on these calipers at all, which could possibly be having an effect)

if not ask your mechanic to order them in from nissan if your mechanic's open saturday. you'll probably get charged a couple of dollars freight.

$12.50 EACH for banjo bolts!
and $150 for a shim set for my calipers (to which I promptly told them to fuck off, and got some $3 stick-on anti squeal shims)

shims arent important, they dont do alot. and there shouldnt be any movement when its all installed and going, the pads will sit up against the disc when the wheel and all that is bolted on.

yer, I had a chat to the brake dude and he reckoned most of the shims were useless too. He recommended the anti-squeals tho (and for $3, I didn't really care).
He also explained that the free-balling was normal (I'm a total brake gumby, so it's a steep learning curve at the moment) - he reckons tehre's no return-force on the pads, they'll just pop back a few thou and that'll all be good.
I still cant work out how the pads won't rub while cornering hard, with no return force on the pads.

draven, there are two things that bring a pad back from the disc when you let off the brake. first and formost is disc runnout. brand new and perfectly straight discs have enough runnout to push the pads back just enough so they dont rub.
secondly is the rubber seal in the caliper which seals the piston. it is slightly offset and deformed when the brake is applied, so when you let off the brake as it reforms it pulls the piston back.
