MR2 3SGTE speedo (it stopped working!) Sat, 07 May 2005 09:50 Go to next message
I broke hard and all of a sudden it stopped working?! Confused

I can turn the speedo cable by hand.. and it shows up on the dash. Tried tightening it up and going for a drive.. nothing.

So i assume its the adaptor to the gearbox. What is interchangable? Celica/camry?

thanks!

update

theres a green cap that must go somewhere. its connected near the speedo what is this thing?

The ST185 has an interchangable speedo sender. Basically anything that runs an E series box should work but the newer ones are all electronic.

There is also a web page around with how to rebuild the sender.

Yep that's the one. Basically you need to pull the speedo sender out then turn the drive gear and see if the output turns. If the output turns when you turn the turn gear and you can make the speedo move by turning the speedo cable, then the problem is in the box. This is not what you want.

The speedo drive, drive gear is drvien by a gear mounted around the differential. To get the differential out the entire gearbox must be disassembled.

It came out without too much trouble..

By the way the Australian Model Mr2/V6 camrys have 12-14 teeth. the turbo imports come in 30 teeth.. so Toyota says

The Australian delivered MR2's were all NA so they all ran S series gearboxes that are a different family to the E153 in the turbo. The ST185 and AW11 Super Charged will be the same part as the SW20 turbo.
