Ozzie Drift - or - 'you can't put a bloody Jap motor in a REAL car' Sat, 07 May 2005 12:20 Go to next message
Some of you may have seen the 'Ozzie Drift' ute at various meetings around the country, showing off. This is an example of what happens with a pile of cash, and a big-name workshop. Now let me take you on a little journey of what happens when someone with some cash, but ZERO taste, comes to Mr Shin.

First up, meet Don. Don is an overweight garlic farmer, with apalling taste in cars and shirts, and a right foot even heavier than his stature would have you believe.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/cressida/2JZGE%20022.jpg

Don's personal favourite form of transport is the 250 crossflow, seen here undergoing an LPG conversion. This lives in a very untidy XF ute.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20095.jpg

Several weeks ago, a couple of unfortunate events took place. First up, Don happened to be present during stuffing a 2JZ into Ryan's Cressida. Some kind of comment was made about 'maybe that Falcon could do with a better engine.' Secondly, he came along to Calder for a drift practice session. He brought the Falcon. He even had a go. He enjoyed himself beyond all comprehension. In the XF. So he says something like 'Shin, what would I need to do to the XF to....' See, it HAD to be the XF ute - anything else would ruin his image. Oh dear. What do I do? Much thought was given to turbo'ing various Falcon motors (including stealing the motor from his old EB XR6 that he drove through a fence one night...). However, he seemed to have really latched onto that earlier comment of 'if only Falcons had some kind of engine like this (when looking at the 2JZ). A little bag full of cash appeared several days later. Mr Shin took this little bag shopping, and came up with this:

Over the coming days, I'll put up some pics of the bits'n'pieces we bought.

Discussion was had about intercooling. Conclusion? Buy one of those horrible Chinese 'coolers - simply because you can't beat them on price (quality is another matter - but we don't want it looking out of place...), plus with Don's reputation, an easily replaceable part isn't a half bad idea...

http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20098.jpg

http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20099.jpg

The frightening thing is that this little piece of wonderment made from melted-down toy cars actually happens to be just the right width to fit between the bumper brackets...

Stay tuned!

I can't believe you're putting a bloody riceburner in a state of the art Australian Design Award winning automobile. Shame. The 250 crossflow is a fantastic motor, it even has an inlet manifold than can be separated from the head.

And you and that bloody useless LPG... where do I put the sausages?

The best bit is that said manifold can be separated into eight separate major components. As a result, it achieves idle control unlike ANY of those damned awful Jap engines.

Let's check out a few more of the parts:

Here's one way to make your XF a whole lot sportier - check out those XR6 seats, in condition that matches the rest of the car! Don comments they are a lot 'tighter' than the brown vinyl bench was.

http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20121.jpg

XR6 wheel is a pretty happening item too... Damned shame the cruise buttons don't work on the XF - actually, not even the horn button works on an XF! Oh, and like the classy job done installing the auto T-bar? Don was in tears to hear he might have to part with the column shift...
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20120.jpg

New wheels were a given - the XF Fairmont wheels just didn't cut it, apparently. Don was again upset to hear that a reasonable brake upgrade wouldn't fit under some 12 slotters (once he got his head around the idea of something big not going in a small hole...) - but the Tickford badges on the EL rims eased the pain. Slightly.

http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20116.jpg

Can these make it drift?
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20118.jpg

Maybe an awful lot more of these can?

Don just loves his Falcons - here's his other one, at idle:

http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20123.jpg
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20122.jpg
Apparently, you shovel coal into the boot or something? Here's the driveway as he left:
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20125.jpg

Essential to any drift car is sharp, responsive, quick steering. They don't come much better than moving up to XF power steering:
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20124.jpg

Another earlier Falcon of Don's - it seems it didn't respond so well to it's little journey through someone's fence? At least it is generous enough to donate parts of itself to both the coal/steam-fired Falcon, and the XF. How very noble.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20126.jpg
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20127.jpg

Looks tough, doesn't it? I wonder if they do them in a currogated finish, to match the tank?
http://www.comcen.com.au/~sheehan/Big%20Don/Picture%20128.jpg

This is the little red box that is intended to keep the 1JZ marching in step:

Ahh well, guess he was hanging around me too much and took some of my less than favourable comments about Falcon engines seriously.

Yes, those mantle-pieces down the sides of the engine bay ARE handy - and I'll bet this XF has got a little more mud under it than when it left the factory...

Yes, it's been far too long since anything was done on this thing, but today the 250 finally came out. Such a sad moment... Note the lovely looking radioactive green crap on the side of the engine - I'm told Ninja turtles live in there! (Well, the cooling system DID look like a sewer...)

Well, it's getting there, bit by bit. First up I thought I'd mention that even I was surprised at the difference fitting the power steering made. Previously, the old steering box was geared so that it gave 5.5(!) turns lock to lock - no WONDER it was such hard work driving this thing (don't forget one had to do a little column shifting as well Razz ) - the power steering box brings this down to a more acceptable 2.5 turns. That's gotta help! Still, with the power steering, wider tyres and extra castor, turning the wheel without any oil pressure is very hard work...

Anyway, to some pics. Here's what the slightly agricultural engine mounts look like: (yes, I did the washing again...)

If there's one time a Falcon REALLY doesn't like, it's bathtime!
And bathtime can be LOADS of fun when you have good friends...

I'll truly retire if I go out to it one morning, and there's two live ducks in the puddle in the back Razz

We even stopped in at Rare's today, and priced up a shaker Very Happy $300 for a fibreglass replica! Pity, because we would have done it had the price been right...

I was actually thinking of being slightly more upmarket, and buying a cheap mailbox from Bunnings/The Warehouse and chopping it in half...

And Boofis, don't worry, Don's mind hasn't improved at all since you saw him last... Then again, what do you remember about ME, hey?
