by yellow sticker im guessing a canary, defect sticker, if its expired, ie you havnt fixed the problems in the time frame that was given to you, them im 99% sure that your car is un-registered now, in which case, if the cops catch you, they will fin you for driving an unregistered vehicle and driving an uninsured motor vehicle, you'll be looking a minimum $500 fine and a cpl points aswell.

well its been a few years since i been in that situation, cops in victoria love handing out those things, and the deal was, that if u dont fix it, in the given time, it became unreg, and you still had to pay the fine lol. revenue raising jerks

i think you'll find the defect notice process pretty much universal across the states:
- police/DoT inspectors pull you over and ream you
- said persons give you a fine for alleged defects and force you somehow to recitify them
- 'rectified' defects are somehow inspected
- if not then car is then considered not safefor driving on public roads (e.g. rego cancelled)
- if caught driving without fixing and inspecting the defects, you face double wammy of driving an unreg car and failing to fix defects

Your registration does not get cancelled. Technically the car is still registered, even if the defect clear time has finished (normally 72 hours). If you take your car to the RTA station say 2 weeks later, get it un defected, then you will be back on the road with whatever registration that you still have. You dont get an extension on the reg.
If the car is defected for a long period of time, and the registration runs out, you wont be able to re-register that car until the defect is cleared.

note: different states have differing rules on defecting.
Am sure that in Qld, if you don't fix up the defects and get them inspected within the period stated on the notice is illegal to continue to drive your car (e.g. it is unroadworthy after the 'fix the shit up' period has passed).
The rego is effectively cancelled (as it's been declared 'unroadworthy' which voids your CTP insurance) between the expiry date of the defect notice and the time at which it is inspected and declared roadworthy.

yes - in Qld you have the period between the day you're booked and a date on the forms stating by which time you have to recitify the problems
in Qld you can also drive an unreg vehicle from home to inspection place then to a DoT shop for the purpose of getting the safety insepction and then registering the car - you need to obtain paid-up CTP prior to heading off to the mechanic.
but if it's because you didn't get the defects fixed in time ... no - get a trailer/tow.

$16 for a 48 hour licence here i beleive, you pay for the licence, drive your car to and from pits.
if police stop you because of no plates, show them permit.
