Ive got an AE82 corolla and
ive been contemplating the 20 valve conversion
for a while. Obviously if i am going to spend
this much on an 1987 corolla im not going
to get my money back on it when i want sell it.
So i guess i really wanna know is it worth it ??
Will i REALLY notice the difference from 88Kw to 127Kw?

Ive read that the 20 valves power is only at high rpm...
and its a bit sluggisih at low rpm ??
Any comments from you 20valve drivers would be great...
inc what you have raced and beaten, and lost to.

What box have you used on your conversion ??
Do u have a LSD ?

ok, i dont own a 20v, but i can let you in on a thing or two Very Happy

from common opinion, the power of the 20V is overrated by toyota, some believe its more like 117kW. Either way its still a 35% power increase (not too bad!) over your standard TVIS 4age.
If u can do the installation yourself.. its definitely worth it!! if you can't, then its a different story, all depends on what the car is worth to you?

As far as how the 20V drives... its quick! dont know about its characteristics though.

Hope this helps

Before deciding on an engine, decide what you want from the car, then go for the engine that will deliver the closest to what you want to end up with...

I'm interested in a 20V also, but after looking into it, for shear power, poeople seem to choose he GZE for obvious reasons. For every day driving, Ive chosen to go with the 20V.

As for noticing the power difference, compare my 4A-C AE82 (55Kw, claimed from the factory... no where near after 17 years!), the 20V will have double the power at the flywheel(110-115Kw or there abouts, dont belive claimed factory figures) it will still only be droping similar amounts throught the drive train, (4A-C 34Kw at the wheels, 20Kw drop) thus giving nearly 3 times the power at the wheels (110 minus 20 gives 90Kw aprox). While this is a very rough way of looking at it, you still end up with quite a noticeable difference at the wheels! For a GZE, it would be an even larger difference give that the GZE has much much more torque.

You are right in saying that the 20V performes better higher in the rev range.

As for the LSD, i belive that the C series FWD Corolla gear box is one of the most expensive to get an LSD for!

As for weather it is all worth it, that really depends what you want from the car... for me, the 20V conversion will be worth it.

Craig.

I doubt the 20v would get 90kw at the wheels
more like maybe 80 max

I have seen 88Kw at the wheels, but the car (a Blue Starlet race car) was running AVGAS and a Motec. At the time the engine was close to standard. Running them on PULP the best that one can hope for is around the 60-66Kw at the wheels in standard trim.
As for LSD, I got one, but it also has an extra gear! If you get a front cut, most of the stuff is there, and a lot of the time, it's the luck of the draw if you get a LSD or Not, in that situtation.

I want the car for everyday driving,
but i also wanna have enough power when
i need it... to blow off people.
The rolla at the moment is running well, and
when Tvis kicks in it feels pretty sweet.
I just want a decent increase on my power at the moment.
I can do the conversion at home with a couple of my mates.
Ive also been thinking about the 100KW 4age,
how does it compare to the 20valve.
Does anybody have some dyno stats ?

i used to have a 20v in a ae92 sx it went good but not much better then the 100kw motor although it was better in the top end department and if your worried about what you will get back from a sale you will get more from the 20v then any other 4ag motor because of the look its neater and newer looking so therefore you will get the most out of the 20v but i doubt you will break even or profit it never happens in cars!
any waysgood luck

on the note of LSD's... i thought the GTZ rolla's were the only one's to receive LSD box's (short of the blacktop 6 sp).... and even then its a "not 100%" that you'll get an LSD with a front-cut.

GZE is worth it... for the torque, power, and ease to improve the power when you get itchy for more!

I you are going to spend Thousands of dollars ($$$) on engine conversions then do worry about what you are going to get for resale and concentrait more on what you want from the car, personally the GZE is the better conversion, as the 20v does not have the torque that i enjoy, but its personal preference.

Spending more than a few hundred dollars on an AE82 overcapitalises it.
if you're worried about "not getting it back when I sell it",then leave the car standard.

I reckon you're better off doing some work to the 16v that's in it now, providing it's still healthy. better gains for the money outlaid.
even rebuilding a 16v,throwing some cams in,and doing a little headwork will get you close to an untouched import 20v's power level, but possibly for less money, and certainly less hassle.

Justin...

p.s.
Ribbo: I've seen a dead std silvertop turn 81kw atw in a PRB. they can make power, but the on paper figures are a bit optimistic.
