I used to see it often on WA roads too. I suspect it's illegal, and it is done to avoid having the car identified by Multinova speed cameras. It seems like the worst offenders were "performance" types (i.e. not Magnas or minivans)

You can get defected for not having one on, so i'm guessing that it is illegal.

Search the old forums. I posted a link to the RTA NSW website stating that you must have a numberplate on both the front and back of a vehicle (unless a motorcycle).

U can have a smaller plate on the front and bigger on the back, useful for people with big ass front mounts.

LOL, just make sure you do it in a white Commondore or something really common, cos if you had something relatively rare, they'd probably try hunt you down.

Mr Messy,
Apart from the fine, I've heard of Ferrari owners having to leave their car where the cops pull them up and walk coz it doesn't have the proper rego plates on it. So it's not as simple as paying the fine.

You guys are partically right... it is in fact legal to have only one plate for a vehicle as long as it is on the back and is clearly visible.... you will still get defected for only having one plate so it is not really worth the pain.... it is just another one of those crosses that the police have with the RTA.... maybe it would be a good thing to bring up at the next meeting perhaps?????

Directly from the NSW RTA Website
Number Plates In NSW:
*All registered vehicles are required to have official number plates on the front and rear. *Motorcycles and trailers are required to have number plates on the rear only. Some motorcycles are issued with 2 black personal number plates, in which case one number plate is required to be fixed to the rear, and the other to the front of the motorcycle. *The plates must display the numbers recorded on the vehicle's registration papers. *If your vehicle has an LPG or CNG installation you will need to ensure that a new identification label is fitted to your new number plates. *The standard plates are black on yellow. Specialised plates are also available on request, see Personal Plates, Custom Plates, Premium Plates and European (Euro) Style Plates.

Cops cant defect you unless it illegal. You'll probably fine that the RTA rules state that you need two plates on a vehicle with some expects like motorcycles only needing one. Why not just check the RTA website?

I remember reading in a melbourne paper once that a few guys decided to cover their numbers and speed thru a amera mooning it. The owner of the car got a knock on the door a few weeks later fom the cops. Its seems they forgot to take down the FOR SALE sign down with his number on it

my brother was searching throgh the rta rules quite vigourously a few years back and he said that with cars like a ferrari they dont have holes for no# plates standard so you dont have to put them on. i dont know if this is still correct or whayever but hey, its not like its gonna affect any of us anyway!!!!!

Not to be picky, but did anyone even read the post I made with a direct cut & paste from the NSW RTA website ?
Quote: | Number Plates In NSW:

|
I don't think you'd be able to argue out of that one, no matter what car you have. I even rang the RTA to make sure, and yes, you need one front & rear no matter what car you have.

Are you 100% sure on that, yes I know it's on the RTA site, but still...
I find it hard to imagine how you'd stick a numberplate on a car that comes with no holes for it... Especially when it's passed all the ADRs and is sold like that...
The pigs and RTA hate you not having front numberplates 'coz it might cut into their revenue raising with the speed cameras...

my friends younger brother got the front plate stolen off his subaru liberty (why someone would want it - i dont know) and he went to the cops about it and they gave him a slip of paper so he couldnt get in trouble for it if he got pulled over. And like the next day he had to go into the RTA and pay 30 bucks to get a new plate.
(this is my first post ever by the way....)

on the going thru camera topic, someone i know was driving home the shitter XC? they just purchased with no plates, and upon realising they went thru a speed camera, proceeded to do laps up and down the road at high speeds.

I started investigating an LCD cover for my numberplate a while back, but never got back to it. My idea was to have a glass-looking cover on the numberplate which is actually some sort of electically activated pigmented crystal. All you need then, is an earth (the car) and one wire to polarise the crystals, and hey presto, instant numberplate tint.

Thats lucky My friend got a warning for his front no plate. it was mounted on his front bar angled up so you could not make out the plate if you looked at it from any angle. The car has a jetspeed bar on it so the plate was mounted on the bottom of the large hole in the middle. It was also a Random.....
