assistance with burning cds for crappy macs

ok, I hate macs and all, but a friend has one and I'm trying to burn her a CD.
I've downloaded a mac file (labelled a .DMG file), and I'd love to know how to burn this to CD so she can use it on her mac... can anyone offer a pointer?

the DMG file is a disk image file - all she has to do is double-click on the DMG and it will mount the file as a read-only disk on the desktop.
So just copy the file to a CD - mac's will mount just about any file system except NTFS. An ISO supporting long filenames will do just fine
Just make sure that if you've used some kind of drag-n-drop disk burner application, you burn the disk to prevent further data being written - many multi-session PC disks tend to barf on macintosh

so... thre should be no copy protection for this type of thing? (hypothetically speaking, if ever chose to copy something that may have copy protection), or will I need to find her a no-cd crack?

extremely unlikely to see copy protection - if there was, there would have been no DMG file
the application might want to see a real CD-ROM if it's been designed that way - but it's usually only games that do that.
if this is the case, any Mac running OS X and with built-in burner has burning software as part of the OS - simply right click on the mounted volume icon and it should give you choice to burn it to a CD.
On v10.3 and above, the utility called "Disk Utility" can also burn disk images. On earlier systems, look for a utility called "Disk Copy" to do the same thing.

1. Remove head from bottom, burn as a file.
2. Give to her and take her advice and buy your self one.
3. ???? (actually this is where you learn that macs rule joo)
4. Profit

I do not know about, or want to know about, macs.
I tolerate them at work everyday, because our company is stupid.
Macs rock only for video and sound editing (and that is largely due to the quality of software and plug-ins available).
oh, and the mac OS cranks like banana sandwiches compared to windows (but really, is that such an achievement?)

Bite me bimbo, my 600mhz g3 (3 yrs old) is faster than E's new p4 2.7ghz with 4x the ram etc. And it doesn't crash whilst in sleep mode.
Seriously, out of the box new laptop had to rebuild windows. . Only had one fault with the mac and that's when it ran out of battery mid software update. Plug in restart and auto rebuild.

not that my PC at home is much better, but it's hard drive is hanging over the endge of the desk, and much of it is jury rigged

Are you running os9 at work? if so is it stand alone or shelled from OSX? if alone I don't understand, 9 or classic I have found to have problems but never crashworthy or blue screen of death.

magnetic media is usually NTFS - but am 'reasonably' sure that nero will default to iso9600 (with various extensions) filesystems for burnable media.
as said previously, it seems to cope with most PC and *nix filesystems (being BSD unix in disguise) so you should be able to just copy/burn/give/profit
as for crashing during sleep or when waking up? can be from:
-not waking for network activity so connections to servers are lost/mangled
-networking confusion, paricularly if an LDAP or DHCP or similar server issues new network credentials upon wake up
-OS X not up to date
-workstations sharing off each other (renewed filesharing activity doesn't always wake up workstations trying to share files)
-is not crashing, you're simply seeing network connections being re-established and/or being forced to re-authenticate
-might not be OS but a specific application (tho i've left QXP 6 running - and sleeping - for a whole weekend with a file opened off another sleeping OS X workstation, so it might only be specific apps)
-SMB shares from W2k and W2k3 servers behave fuken weird, some let network connections survive sleep, others dont.
before blaming your Mac, i'd look at your system admin - do it load and run unwanted shite, does everyone have 96Gb of shared iTunes playlists, are you doing stupid stuff like using office X or 2003, is your mac server a real mac, are you trying to use the system 'fontbook' for font management, are too many apps are actually running, is the drive nearly full (Toast leaves disk images behind even when you say don't save), does it have enough RAM? ...

oh, I'm pretty sure the sysadmin has something to do with it. The computers, while not top of the line, are *MORE* than adequate for what they're doing, and the server is more than adequate as well.
*shrugs* I don't need to use them all that often, and I just make sure they don't get a chance to sleep

why the hell are you sleeping them anyway?? If they are on a network they should not be set to sleep, if your worried about having the drives running all the time then you "could" use the engergy saver pref pane to tell the HD to sleep after say 15minutes but set the system to never sleep.
when the macs go to sleep all network interfaces are shut down anyway. I have set up lots and lots of Mac networks and when the macs have been set up CORRECTLY by someone who knows what they are doing the macs are FAR FAR more reliable than PC's. Dont forget there is no virus's or spyware for OS X either you can actually plug a mac straight onto the web, no firewalls, no anti-virus, just use firefox and you can browse all the porn you like and not have to worry about dialers or virus's or popups hassling you.
if you have the dmg file on the desktop on the mac that has a burner in it and its running OS X then just stick a blank cd in the machine and the blank cd icon will pop up on the desktop then just drag the dmg file to the cd icon that poped up and then drag the cd to the Dock where the trash icon was and it will look like a radioactive sign or sumthing you konw the black and gold sign and it will say Burn.
If your burning the dmg file from a PC just try to burn it as a ISO9660 cd, or if you've got XP on your PC just stick the Cd in the machine and drag the dmg file to the cd drive and hit the burn files to cd button on the left of the window, this will work fine on the macs
oh and for the record macs can read and write most filesystem formats including UFS and FAT32 in addtion to the mac HFS and HFS+. OS X can also READ ONLY NTFS.
good luck

Some people just can't be convinced. But each to their own
Basically fire up any CD burning app on a PC, eg Nero, EZ CD Creator, whatever, dump the file onto the disc (just burn it as a file), and the mac will pick it up fine.
Gimme a mac anyday...no viruses, no crashes, easy to use. Just make sure you have at least 512MB RAM in your office macs, and run MacOS X 10.3.8 or better. And turn off sleep mode! Just set your hard drive to sleep if you are a power tightass.
