how to tell what spring rating my springs are? Thu, 21 November 2002 21:59 Go to next message
so here's a curly one...

AE86, king springs, koni adjustables. Lowered slightly.

It wasn't me who fitted the uprated suspension gear, and it wasn't the last owner.

How can i tell what spring rate they are and how much my car has been lowered from stock?

I'm wanting to get some roll centre adjusters fitted, but it's rather tricky to do without knowing how far the car has been lowered.

tis all very tricky... ideas? I'd prefer not to have to pull the springs/shocks off the car, but it's an option if necessary.

If you want to accurately measure your spring rates, the springs will have to come out. Place a spring on the ground and measure its height, then put something heavy (known weight) on top of the spring and measure its height again. From this you can determine the spring rate.

well, that was my first guess... heh... I'd just hoped there was some standard way of marking springs to indicate rate etc (like on tyres) so i could check it out that way...

as far as the lowering effect of the springs...

grab a stock sprinter and measure the difference in ground clearance at a standard point?

grab stock sprinter springs and measure the difference between the height of the springs (wouldn't work unless they were equal spring rates would it?)

Construct a lever system, that will allow more force on the spring with far less weights.

If you for example have a 1 to 10 ratio lever. Hang 10kg at far end, you get 100kg action on the spring.
For track racing something like 60kg/cm is a common ballpark for springs. To get such spring to compress 5cm, you need 300kg acting on the spring.

All you need is a metal stick anchored onto garage floor, about the height of a free spring. Bolt on a long lever onto it and you're all set.
Secure spring onto garage floor with a steel wire. If things go wrong that will prevent it from shooting all around in your garage.

This system involves some labour but you'll get really accurate redings from springs.

Whatever you do you will have to remove the spring. Take the spring to a springworks and the have all the gear to work out your spring rate. They have a caged lever system as descibed by 5KinKP60. It should also cost you nothing. Also whilst you're there, check out their prices on springs....often they are significantly cheaper than name brands and you know the exact rate of your springs, rather than some bullshit claim of "30% stiffer".
