Hey
Just wondering if anyone could put any clear pictures up of an engine with turbo setup. Just interested!
Thanks

Here is a pic of my turbo engine bay.
Basically, air goes in filter, gets compressed by turbo, pushed through the intercooler pipes, goes through intercooler at the front and heads to the inlet manifold. The fuel is injected in the runners and goes boom in the cylinder, exhaust gases exit and head through the exhaust manifold and join into one section and they all go through the rear wheel of the turbo which is attached to the front wheel. Then exits and heads down the dump pipe.
I don't know if that is what you were after but hey...?

sorry, can't comment on running stuff as it isn't yet. Have to fix oil pressure problem.
I have mild steel piping which my dad and I did ourselves that are sprayed so they don't rust.
Exhaust manifold is a stainless Trust item. 6 into 1 with a pipe for external wastegate. You can't see the wastegate as it goes down near the dump pipe.
I plan on running about 15psi to start with. That should be pretty bloody fast for me for a while

Ah, care to update when it is running? What paint did you spray with? Have you run into trouble with your open pod? What was the mild steel piping like to bend? 15psi is plenty fast enough for me! Thanks for the info dude! Good luck with the car, looks a beaut!
Thanks

yeah mate, will update one day
If you are talking about coil pack cover, that was already done for me
Don't know what trouble I would be running into? Unless you mean legality wise. In which case, that is the least of my worries. The car is mod plated but that doesn't mean much compared to officer's discretion It will have a heat shield around it soon hopefully and I have a bonnet scoop above it to suck it some nice air.
I was very lucky and didn't even need to bend the pipes. I bought a couple of 90deg bends and a 180deg bend and some silicone joiners and that was all I needed.
Thanks mate

Thanks

Hey
KE38 would you care to hmmm explain your "plumbing" in your engine bay. I'm struggling to work it all out lol! It looks like it would have massiv powahz lol.

Where bouts you running the end of the pipe out? Out the front?
Thanks for the pics again!
Thanks

plumbing is easy to work ouit... he has an air box on the drivers side of the engine bay with the intake pipe to the turbo going accross the front of the engine and into the compressor housing. what i dont get is why you chose to do this? Why not have the air box on the passenger (turbo) side of the engine and save yourself some plumbing hassles plus having such a long intake pipe... there is a fair chance that any air that is cooled via the cold air intake is heated back up due to engine bay heat + long pipe.
not having a go at ya mate, just curious to know why you did it this way?

I think KE382TG didn't have much room on the turbo side, plus teh intake pipe was already fabricated from the previous setup with factory computer & air flow meter.
How much time do you think the air spends in that pipe? When its rushing through at great velocity, its hardly gonna soak much heat from the relatively low surface area of the pipe.
Here's mine. No cold air here at all!

I think everyone else has explained it well. Pod is in aluminium box, pipe to turbo inlet, compressor to intercooler, cooler to throttle inlet.

The airbox has two 3" feeds which take in air from the front of the car, one is high, one is low. One would probably have been sufficient but two can't be bad . If you run a feed make sure it's not too low or the next puddle you drive through could be the death of your engine

Originally this was running the factory ECU and airflow meter and factory air box (as TE72_Turbo has already mentioned). All this stuff could only fit on the drivers side of the engine bay so that crossover pipe had to be made. After going aftermarket ECU I was going to ditch the crossover pipe but I couldn't construct the air box neatly on the passenger side of the engine bay so I just kept it. My BOV vents back into this large pipe too.
Quote: | there is a fair chance that any air that is cooled via the cold air intake is heated back up due to engine bay heat + long pipe.
|
Surpisingly the pipe doens't even get hot if the car is in motion. The air box droppped intake temps considerably and I don't think I get much increase in temp in the pipe.

No probs at all, I hope I explained it all. But basically the pipe was a necessity in the old setup and is just convenient to keep in the new setup

T28 (from a set of twins on a GTR Skyline), 19psi (high boost) or 13 psi (low boost), microtech MTX-8, 170rwkw@19psi (made this power at numerous dyno days in Canberra and Sydney, including the Toymods Dyno day).
Phil (TE72_Turbo) you better show them some more current pics when you are finished with the upgrades
