Thinking about getting harnesses for my Recaro seats...do I require a roll cage to use these, otherwise how are they fitted to an Ae86. Taking out the back seat is an option, but I would prefer to keep it.

I've just put harness's in my Supra that has Sparco seats.

It depends on what type of harness. I have a clubman style thats a 4 point. Just fitted it to the current seatbelt mounts on either side. Folded down the rear seats and mounted the back to the original back seat belt mounts.

Bolting them to the back seat mounts is probably not the best idea. Puts too much downward pressure on the seat during a high speed accident - that's why rally cars are only allowed to mount them horizontally (or thereabouts).
Also, I think when you change the seating capacity of your car, it needs to be certified or re-registered, I'm not sure about the full details for that though.
Unless you are planning to put yourself in a situation where you will have a high speed accident, I'd stick with the lap-sash.
And there is almost no safe way to keep the back seats and put in a harness (for above-mentioned reasons).
ON TOP of all that, not all harnesses are ADR approved, most are FIA or SFI approved and have no approval for use on the oz roads so look for the ADR compliance label if you still want to get them.

thanks for that

so id be better off installing a harness bar or a full rollcage?
im thinking of myself here, safety is important if im going to be racing my 86. i have to get ADR compliant harnesses to race anyhow
Smile

any good brands recommended?

im awake that u have to re-register the car afterwards
im thinking i might just scrap the back seat and carpet etc

not sure though... might need a car for transporting PEOPLE one day

Very Happy

FWDBOY,

The rear harness leads are bolted horizontally to the the top of the rear seat belt mounts so they have no downward preassure at all. Completly in line with the holes in the seat that they go through. The rear seats are folded down permanently. The Harness's are 'Belt and buckle' style from Sabelt racing.

As for it to be legal, then I have know idea, I saw in a magazine that sayed they were but at the place I bought them off sayed no harness are legal. Standard seat belts are still in place just in case I get pull over. The harness's fell way safer then the lap sash. And if you get the full racing type harness they have an expiry date on the them.

ae86drift: if you are going to be racing your AE86, then you will most likly have to install a roll cage any way. Better read the Cams manual first!! This may also have a bearing on weather or not you can remove the rear seat and carpet!

Also, heres somthign else to think about. Say you roll your car. If your in a harnes, and dont have a roll cage, what happens if your roof crushes in? where do you go? Thats why its always a good idea to have at least a half cage when usung harneses.

The idea behind a lap sash seat belt is you can lay over to one side if your cars roof crushes in. (weather or not you can actualy do that in an accident s another matter!)

Yes, it is possible to get a cage into a road car legaly, but it will cost time and money to get it passed, it must be done to a Cams competition spec, and you may have to butcher some of the interior and dash to get the cage in correctly!
Also, is some states, the may require you getting a 'dedicated rally car' registration, which apart from being expensive, has a number of stipulations about when and why you can drive the car on the road.

To race under Cams, the belts dont have to be ADR compliant. They have to meet a specification that Cams is happy with (FIA, SFI etc) How ever, if you have a rally car, this would mean you would need ADR compliant ones as a rally car is driven on the road as part of a rally. (this applies to seats as well!!)

Supraman has a good solution i think. The harneses sound like they are installed correctly, and he has left hiself the back up of standard belts 'just in case'.

Another 'got ya' is that in the specifications for SFI belts (this is not Cams, but the manufacturer) is that SFI certified belts MUST be returned to the manufacturer every 2 years to have the webbing replaced, no matter what condition they are in! I've been caught out by this once!

Last but not least, having been in a rally car accident a couple of times now, get 3" wide harnesses! Much better the 2" if you do actualy hit somthing. If you are serious about getting harneses for safety, get a 5 or 6 point style with the crotch belt as well. Not only does this hold the waist belt at a better position, it will stop you 'submarineing' under the belts and having to pick your knee caps pout from under the dash in a head on accident! (I've seen it happen! She ended up with 4 broken ribs as well...)

remember, you get what you pay for! Dont skimp on saftey equipment.

Craig.
