My mate had the same problem. Sorry to say he has not fixed it.
Things that have been mentioned have been-
Bad fuel causing slight knock
Charger temps / intake temps too high
Chatter from the head in high rpm mistaken as knocking
I'm sure there will be more on that list to add as people reply.
As for some more info , his car ( ae82 with ae101 gze ) was wired correctly and ran fine for over 2 years before he had any problem. He has the Nevo 175mm pulley, stock ECU , front mount cooler , upgraded fuel pump. The cutting of the charger was basically in higher gears such as 3rd and above. On the dyno it was seen that at 5500rpm the power just drops straight down as the charger clutch is released.
Another cause we were looking into was the possiblity that the charger was on the way out. He had a boost leak that took a while to sort yet he drove it anyway , when it was sorted the boost was still at a lower level and the problem seemed a bit worse.

Thanks for that info.
I've passed that on to the guys I'm paying to fix it, and I've been told they are really good.
So if they find a solution, I'll let you know.

My 1GGZE seems to do that sometimes, the charger cuts off before the rev limiter, i was thinking that it might be a protection mech for the charger to save the vanes???

Well guys, it seems they found the problem. And its embarrasingly simple. Mind you easier for a workshop with deep pockets, and a dyno, to diagnose and test.
All it was... a faulty knock sensor.
Apparently the car has picked up 20kw at the wheels and is running an AFR of 11:1 up high, rather than 9:1. I haven't picked up the car yet, so I'm yet to see what its like for myself.
I'll keep you posted.
