Hi
on my corona MKII rx12, the brake shoes are identical, cept for one thing.
on one of the shoes the lining runs all the way to the top of the shoes, on the other it has a couple of inches without lining, but there the lining runds all the way to the buttom of the shoe, so theyr made oposite when it comes to the lining.
The question is, wich one of them should be front and wich one rear?
thanks in advance

I would say the ones with the lining all the way to the top would be the front shoes.

this is correct. this is called a leading brake shoe. If you fit it the other way you can have problems with brakes grabbing and locking.

Hi again
thanks for ur answers
Ok now im seriously confused.
I looked at my celica and the shoes are sitting the same way there, the shoes that has shortest lining on top is the front one.. same with my carina too...
are they really all on wrong? my celica and carina has fine brakes tho.
but as i mentioned the corona rear brakes locks way before the front ones.
any more opinions on whats wrong or right`?

i've only called them leading/self energizing & trailing shoes, but this site http://autorepair.about.com/cs/doityourself/a/aa03 1701a_2.htm
calls them primary & secondary, and has this noteQuote: |
NOTE: In many cases the primary shoe material is longer than the secondary shoe material. The longer shoe always goes towards the rear of the car and the short shoe towards the front.
|
that i think, is wrong. the leading & trailing will depend on whether the wheel cylinder is located on the top or bottom. only when it's on the top, is the leading/primary/self energizing shoe
towards the front.
either way, just keep'em the same, side to side, or one will work better then the other and pull to that side.
you may have noticed stuff with 2 wheel cylinders, or motorcycles that have a linkage to operate both shoes. that makes both shoes leading/primary/self energizing.
