Jab what?!!?!
AE86 rear suspension - coilovers etc? Thu, 19 May 2005 02:24 Go to next message
I did a search for "ae86 rear coilovers", and nothing came up but one old for sale thread.

Just curious...
With the recently covered s13 front suspension conversion by Simon (it was heavily appreciated, I guess maybe one reason why there was not a shitload of replied is they were to needed as it was covered so well).....

What about the rear?
Coilovers to fit ae86 to change the spring/damper setup which are independant of each other.
Any issues?
Or a straight bolt up? (Coilovers for ae86 rear's existing).
I seen a Drift Tengoku episode (6), with Katsuhiro Ueo's black trueno with rear coilovers. No idea if they are designed for ae86 or grafted from another car as I can't understand japanese...

Any info or suggestions?

Also a friend talked about a computer operated system that allowed you to adjust coilovers from insid eyou car, much like the airbag suspension system. for $800.
Any more info on that?

If you check back thru members rides, if you find the pics of my car '170bhp's ae86' you will see a picture of a rear coil over conversion i did to my ae86.

Yeh... this would be ideal after converting to a S13 front set-up.... I know the 86 has springs and shocks that are independent of each other and realise theres obviously more involved with this mod...
so has anyone done this...(more than just photos) a guide would be smick and a list of the parts required/price ect

for the money you are paying, they are not worth it unless you really think ur gonna need to raise and lower ur car on a regular basis

i suggest that you just get some trd/tokiko/gab adjustable shocks and a spring in any rate you want... as this is essentially all they are

they are a wank... aren't needed in my opinion

as you said, t3 make them, otherwise speak to an engineer and get a custom thread housing and rings to match

yeh... I know a decent spring/shock combo would be just as good in most cases...although like u said' I want to be able to raise/lower the whole car with minimal hassle... and as I plan to run coilovers up front....then running them on the rear would make this a whole lot easier....

cheers

I think some of you guys don't realise the reason for having coilovers, you think it purely to raise and lower the car!! having coil overs front and rear allows me to put my car on a set of scales and balance the car weights across the front and rear axles and from front to rear.....so shiri if you think this is wank you really have no idea on how to set up suspension!!!!

running these also reduces the max width available for a wheel/tyre and also its highly recomended to support the shocker mount on the diff. Sounds like alot of money and effort for questionable returns, I would machine my own stuff up if I wanted these. Also Kings sell a few bits that support small diameter center threaded collars which I think would be perfect for this.

I believe on a road going car doing no competition work that they are probably overkill, but I do think its funny that no one seems to question having them on the front!! what I do like about having coil overs all round was that I was able to put the car on a set of scales and balance the car front to back and left to right. This allows me to compensate for driver, fuel etc etc. as per issues with wheel clearance if you use 2.25inch springs there is plenty of room. AND it wasn't that much to machine up, all up my conversion including springs cost me under $100. It seems that people are acting very violently towards this suspension modification but I suppose at the end of the day it's these differences that make my car so much better in the handling department Smile

I might do it one day just because I have all the gear to do so already. I am curious though did you brace the shocker mounts? do the shockers have any sort of bush in the end of the eye? When u had it weighed from left to right was it out by much?

Mainly because setting the front of your car up properly is far more important than setting up the rear. The rear is just following like a trailer in some ways (I am exaggerating slightly). Even on go-karts with no suspension - setting up the front end is pretty important.

Personally you can do coilovers on the rear if the cost versus benefit equation comes out in your favour. If you do the conversion completely this might not be the case especially when compared to converting the front over.

Anyone looked at the rear end set-up of the new 350Z......... Rolling Eyes

The common way to do the rear coilovers is to locate them in the same place as the stock springs. A la:

Ill post more on it when i get home, this keyboard sucks.

did I find my corner weights out? yes, just to set the scene I'm running TRD blues in the front with full 60mm cut on the struts which means I have very little suspension droop, I found at the track that I could lock the right hand front brake very easy (FD series 7 caliper) so I corner weighted the car and noticed that the RHF had less weight on it so I adjusted all the coil overs front and back to balance up the car, end result no longer locking RHF brake. so obviously I had less weight on the RHF which in braking was causing this unloaded(compared to the others) to lock, I run 380lbin front springs and 250lbin rear(which I have found to be VERY neutral for track work). my modified top mount is still rubber but the bottom is alloy, noise is not a problem as all the suspension front and rear uses rod/rose/heim joints.

Ergh, that was me posting from Steve's account because i was out at JMS.

That design is pretty easy. Basically drill a hole in the lower spring perch on the diff, weld some pipe in and then weld the threaded section to the pipe. Then unbolt the bumpstop and bolt a smaller bumpstop with an upper hat in there instead.
Job done.

Its what a lot of the guys use for IPRA, as we arnt allowed to change the suspension design from stock.

They arnt my height adjusts, they are from the PDM car featured here:
http://www.pdm-racing.com/features/AE86_buildup.ht ml

I will be doing a fairly similar thing to my new diff soon. Very handy for setting corner weights as 170bhp has said.

takai, works ok? appears to be a good way of doing it, to be honest I didn't even think of doing it like that!and yes you could set corner weights, which is the ONLY reason I wanted coilovers on all four corners, you will be suprised what the cornerweighting is once you get it on some scales!

Seems to work quite well from everything ive heard, i havnt done it yet, but will be very soon. The best bit is that its IPRA legal.

yeah I'm a big fan of IPRA, I've been following it from very early on many many years ago here in South Oz, I have many friends running cars in the class, lap record is held at Mallala by Adam Allan 1minute 15.77!!!

Well starting next year ill be in the class as well. Was going to enter this year, but other committments held me up, and seeing as the car is slightly roasted atm it wouldnt have done me any good anyway.
