is this some sort of mechanism that makes them illegitimate cuz i took em out?

I don't know how the 86 works but on most newer cars the seatbelts are controlled by a retractor computer.
Basically it uses an accelerometer bolted to the chassis to work out when the car is decelerating beyond a certain threshold... when this happens it locks a solenoid in the seatbelt mechanism.
Did you mess with the accelerometer???

my soarer wont let the seatbelts retract if the car's on an angle. once you start driving, they come out fine.

With the ae86 belts they wont come out unless they are perfectly straight and not on any angle. I stuffed around for so long with this and was about to chuck the things out the window.
But yeah, hold them vertical and pull the belt out slowly and you should be right.

A computer for seats belts never heard of them but I'm not surprised. I would have said they have weights which extend out with Kenosha "I don't really know how to spell this word" locking the belt and yes they have to be upright.

they also need to be perpendicular to the horizon as there's a ball bearing in there which will prevent them coming out if they're on an angle.

yeah they are driven by a ball bearing setup that drops into position if they are on an angle. you need to make sure they are in *just* the right spot and youull be fine.. just keep changing the angle till you get it right.
