Interested. Is this out of a late JZA80 (ie the one with twin row syncros)? How much for shipping to postcode 2153? Thanks.
Eddie.

Whats the main difference between the late model w58 and early models? Does it handle more power?

I don't know what model it came out of.
The differences are in the sandwich plates. The stronger ones are the ones with steel plates.
The one I have has alloy I think. Will check tomorrow.
..and as far as pictures go, I will make a shot of the shifter position with my mobile, as my digital camera is getting repaired.

Hmmm ok. Well if you can figure out exactly which box you have, i'll definately be interested.
Son_E: Read up on the FAQ in the techs. Its got a crapload of stuff about w5* boxes.

Actually, IIRC ALL W58s have steel sandwich plates, and the W55s, W57s etc have the alloy ones.

From what i can see the later model one has double syncros, a few more bearings to make the shift a bit smoother, a magnetic pickup in the casing and improved input shaft.
The actual gear selector mechanism is also of a much better design, alot squarer, less likely to break, and larger in size with less play between itself and the housing. It should also maintain gear selection alot better than earlier models which had a chamfered edge on the selector and a much more binding engagement.
The newer box has a much more 'certain' engagement to the gear selection.

Negatory. I have personally seen many MA61 supra's with Alloy plate W58's. They do indeed have the W58 ratios in them.

Just checking here.
Which bit is the sandwich plate?
I am actually interested in this gear box too, and I'm in Adelaide.

Sorry for the long delay in replying but I have been very busy.
The picture is from a crappy phone, and shows the shifter housing.. not good quality, but you can make out whats what.
Eddie - Don't know if it's from an JZA80, and no way of finding out.
Son_E - well the one with the steel sandwich plates is said to handle more power, and would handle more power no doubt about that... but as different threads have stated - usually the W5x box fails in different areas, and the cause of failure isnt the alloy sandwich plate. If the V8 boys are happy with 'supra style' boxes and they don't blow them up (too often..), I think it is pretty irrelevant whether the sandwich plate is steel or alloy in a car that doesn't produce HUGE amount of power/torque. Just my opinion though...
Big T - can't figure that out - and I don't want to lie...
Stefan - It is a W58.
Wilbo666 - Thank you. 6 years ago when I was checking out boxes, most of them were alloy - I don't think anyone even knew the differences between the various models.
Steve M - about half way down the box... you will be able to see them - if the box is clean.
mcostalos - If your offer gets a little bit bigger, it's your

If thats the shifter it came with, it's not from a JZA80. They hang off the back of the box

Going by that picture, it looks more like that of an MA61 shifter position.
I have one and thats where it sits.
