Celica engine swap feasability

Hi, I'm the owner of a 76 RA23 Celica, (http://www.xdesign.com.au/celica.php), and I've been wondering what kind of engine could fit in it. Everything I've read said a Supra 6 would never fit, yet your site says that a 2JZ-GTE engine will fit. I had a bit of a scrounge around the net and everything I saw said, lots of money, lots of pain in the butt. What would be your comments/suggestions?
cheers

Hey mate
2JZ-GTE ??? i dont think so ....not legal either
the one supra 6 that will fit without moving the firewall is the 1G-GTE (correct me if im wrong ppl)....and i rekcon thats the go
but ppl will prob say that its a heavy angine and that it'll stuff up your handling (looking at u Norbie )

Should get removed from the swap list then
RA23 (76 - 78) - 4A-GZE, 18R-GEU, 3T-GTE, 1G-GTE, 7M-GTE, 2JZ-GTE, 3S-GTE, 1UZ-FE
gives people like yours truly crazy idea's

A 2J in an old celica would be possible, but not for a road car. Have you left out 1J or was it not on the list?

List said most powerful engine shown, hence 2j over 1j I believe. I think the hardest thing is just finding out for sure. Everyone I've talked to has had a different opinion. I read one site that said basically forget it, would never fit. Was prolly talking about a different model tho

Some guy that works near where i live is whacking in a 1JZ-GTE in a 23.....he obviously had to move the firewall back but its gonna fit... but yeah moving the firewall back as u know is a pain in the ass
so i say stick with the 1g-gte ....and youll be more than well satisfied
But if u want i can talk to him and get some details if u want

I know of at least two RA23/28's with 1JZ-GTE's installed, and that's with no firewall mods. It's a big job to do it right, but it can be done. The 2JZ-GTE is the same length and width but it's a little bit taller, so it should fit but modifications to the bonnet may be necessary for headroom.
Of course the car's overall weight will go through the roof and chassis balance will be utterly screwed. Half the reason I own an old Celica is because it's so light and "chuckable" - but if you put a big lump of six in the front you're just left with an overpowered 25 year old car that's good for drag racing and not much else.
IMO a 3S-GTE conversion is a much better option. It will be cheaper, it will go in much easier, weight/chassis balance won't be affected, and it will develop more power than an RA23 can realistically use on the street.

I am all for pushing the bar a little, but you have to be reasonable, too much engine weight in a light street car is a big dissapointment.
I would go with either the 1G-GTE or a 3S-GTE, they are both great engines, install relatively easily, are engineer friendly and have been done plenty of times before.
I would go for the 1G as there are plenty of guys in the club that have done it before, and know the pitfalls. The engine is tuff as and given a bit of boost will more than satisfy the itchy right foot.
Either way have fun.

I think after reading what you guys said and doing abit of scrounging around the 1G-GTE sounds like the best option. This is like a, in six months or so project, just wanna make sure I know what I want before I start buying stuff

Yeah, I figured twice as much power would need some new brakes. Also would need to change the suspension, the travel in it now is bordering on the non-existant
