Have a talk to our resident Gaycar employee, the Wizzle, oops, um, I mean the Witzl. He should be able to sort you out with some of the good stuff.
They're usually about 80 bucks for the basic uniden handheld, 100, 120 etc for more features 'n that. I think most people would have the 80 or 100 buck ones.
No they're not illegal, but they would be to use a handheld one while driving.

NOTE FROM THE WITZL:
Digitalk UHF CB Handheld radio, 40 channel, repeater station functions, full features incl - VOX function, channel scan, dual watch, backlight, NiMH recharging capabilities etc etc
all for a MEGRE $55inc GST!!!
These are what i use Mani, as well as Matt (in black supra), Pete (HKSPete), Nark, as well as a few others i cant recall at the moment. One thing to note is the LEGAL use of the handsfree VOX headset (extra $11), which has a function that transmits when you talk (has adjustable sensitivity and can be turned off) and makes it FULLY LEGAL to use, it would also allow you to hear it over your F**king loud exhaust mate!! The unit is also small, lightwieght and can recharge NiMH batteries with a bonus recharger ($10).
Im going to put together a package for you then Mani (and anyone else)
1x DC1010 (UHF handheld)
1x DC1012 (VOX handsfree headset)
1x DC1014 (Recharger for batteries)
4x SB2444 (AAA NiMH rechargeble 650mAH)
ALL FOR $80!!!..... now beat that....
Quote from supplier (gaycar):
Quote: | 40 Channel UHF/CB Pocket Communicator
This lightweight handheld transceiver is suitable for all manner of professional and leisure activities such as hiking & leisure, use on building sites, IT-cablers & electricians, inter-car road trip communication, farming, etc. This is a quality UHF radio and, whilst just 0.5W output, it is NOT a toy. Open field transmission range is up to an incredible 5km, with typical city range up to one kilometre.
Because of the quality achieved with UHF transmissions, the transceiver is excellent for anyone who uses their mobile phone to communicate with a family member, workmate or friend, living or working nearby. The savings made over mobile phone calls would see these radios pay themselves off very quickly indeed! We tested them in the light industrial area surrounding our Silverwater headquarters in Sydney, and achieved a clear range of over 4 blocks.

HEY MANI,
if you wanna spend some dollars buy a good one, those little ones suck arse, they dont have the power to go the distance.
You are better off to spend the extra and buy a 5 watt handheld with a car charger. QA15

*cough*illegal&expensive*cough* -joking mate!
WEll you can go justin's route, but personnaly i dont like having 5W worth of RF poundning into my body, that and they are slightly illegal (from memory). Oh, and damn expensive.
Yes the small handhelds dont have the power output or the range, but they are dirt cheap, and do the trick for cruising. And and the amount of discount you are getting from me, its worth it!
note: the unit alone sells for $80 retail!
And yes i am a salesman.... but i mainly put all that info there so you know what you are buying, and dont have to ask 15 questions to find out 1 answer

well theorically, yes.... almost anything DC operated can run off a car's power.. just depends on your level of electronics expertise
If you were to do it you would void warranty.. and they last long enough with the NiMH batteries anyway... i got 4 cruises out of my last charge!

5 Watts is standard power on citizen band so its not illegal!
If you would like to buy a second hand radio I could supply you with a 16 channel programmed with what ever channels you want! It would be a commercial grade portable radio with built in secall! I could also supply 4 NiMH batteries! If you are interested, we can negotiate a price!

SHANE is correct in saying that 5 watt is completely legal and that anything more can only be used with a license, 5 watts is standard for a mobile UHF CB unit.
