3tgteu cam timing Sat, 21 May 2005 07:26 Go to next message
Hi there, I recently swapped my cams and im sure the cam timing is out because its not running as well as it was.

Whats the best way to make sure they are correct?

There are 2 marks on the crank pully, the first one i assume is TDC and 2nd is the timing mark.. this correct?

When the piston is at top dead centre, I can put a set square on the front of the engine and the dot is pointing straight up... not straight up to the sky, but since the engine is on a lean, its straight up from the engine.

Tell me if image is not working.

You need to line up the TDC mark, and set the cams to that. The other is for the spark timing (timing light reference).

Edit - sorry I am a bit tired and not following things too well.

You are correct that the timing notches need to be vertical in relation to the engine. Note that the tolerance for them is 0.5mm (I use 0.1 as a rule because I am anal). To measure that they are on position I do

1)turn the pulley ONLY clockwise, when you are facing the front of the engine, to TDC

2) measure from the cam cover stud to the collar (using vernier caliper)

3) measure to the edge of the notch

4) note that the collar is 50.8mm dia (from memory) and the notch is 4mm wide.

5) get the intake cam right

6) set the exhaust cam in relation to the intake cam by measurement.

7) turn the engine over 2 x complete revolutions and re-check.

If you change the cams but dont change or redo the valve shims could this mean that valves are slightly open? or do incorrect shims simply introduce ticking?

Im unsure ofo which stud you are talking about but im sure it will be obvious when I have a look at it tomorow (damn its 12.43am here)
