Hi All,

Just after opinions... / options..

I have a '71 TA22 that is due for a transplant..
I not too sure what to put in.. I would like something that is fairly easy to put in (not too much cutting of the firewall if possible), but has a nice amount of power to it, and pref RWD...

I am looking at the 3T-GTE engine but am not sure if this is the right way to go.. apparently they have more power than the 4AGE / 4AGZE 's ? I notice the 3S-GTE coming up alot in the forums.. what the diff between the two and ease of install / power?

Thanks heaps for your help! Much appreciated..

If you want "fairly easy", scratch the 3S off your list. This is pretty much the ultimate transplant for a TA22 but it's difficult and expensive to do it properly, mostly because the 3S was never manufactured in a north-south layout.

The 3T-GTE is the old favourite for the TA22 and the results can be extremely good, especially with a decent turbo, cooler and management, but they're quite old now and some parts are getting hard to find. You'd have to budget for a rebuild if you went down this path, and that bumps the total cost up a long way.

For some reason I've always been bored by the idea of a 4A-GZE, but it's looking like the best relatively simple transplant for an old Celica these days, unless you want to look outside the Toyota parts bin of course (eg SR20 *spit*). They're small, relatively powerful, can be converted to RWD with minimal effort, easy to get parts for, and there's a huge knowledgebase for anything 4A related. You could certainly do worse that's for sure.

If it was me I'd be very tempted by the 3S option though. Very Happy
