Pinging (detonation)

Hey guys,
Not sure what actual pinging sound is suppose to be, but I think mine is. Basicaly, as soon as it comes on boost, in anygear, and not even thrashing it, i hear this tic tic tic sound. I hear it say, im in second, at 2000rpm, and slowley accelerate, as soon as the eboost "boost light" comes on, i hear it. Why could it be pinging? I always use Optimax, and this is at standard boost. What damage can it do???
Cheers

Isn't pinging usually caused by having your timing too far in advance?

pinging sounds like a rattling noise
pinging can do some major damage if left unfixed
can blow headgaskets, screw big end bearings, crack heads beyond repair, crack ringlands on pistons, and in extreme cases smash conrods

Funny you say that, it started happening after it was tuned...

yeah ... talk to Chris Davey about how a 'good tune' at a 'reputable performance shop' can really make your day (or in his case require another engine).

Get a Milo tin, put a couple of dozen marbles in it, put the lid back on, and shake it.
That is what pinging sounds like.
Not to say the occasional tick tick isn't pinging though.
Take it to a DIFFERENT performance shop, and ask them to test drive it. See if they think its pinging.
Find out on here who is a good place to go to.

well i could explain it,
( basically its when the fuel ignites before its meant to, and this causes mechanical problems with the way the engine works and stresses out the components.)
but here is a explanation courtesy of nissansilvia.com :
What is Pinging / Detonation ??
Detonation (also called "spark knock") is an erratic form of combustion that can cause head gasket failure as well as other engine damage. Detonation occurs when excessive heat and pressure in the combustion chamber cause the air/fuel mixture to autoignite. This produces multiple flame fronts within the combustion chamber instead of a single flame. When these multiple flames collide, they do so with explosive force that produces a sudden rise in cylinder pressure accompanied by a sharp metallic pinging or knocking noise. The hammer-like shock waves created by detonation subject the head gasket, piston, rings, spark plug and rod bearings to severe overloading. Mild or occasional detonation can occur in almost any engine and usually causes no harm. But prolonged or heavy detonation can be very damaging. So if you hear knocking or pinging when accelerating or loading your engine, you probably have a detonation problem.

Damn, thanks for that, that explains it well! Cheers!
