why was it a joke?
because they didnt go into huge technical detail about how to actually perform the engine swaps? so what? it was a guide to the different types of engines available & not much more.
for the length of the article i thought it was pretty cool... im sure theres quite a lot of people out there now who have a better understanding of Toyota engines thanks to Fast Fours.

Haydn,
My personal opinion, I could see no value at all in it. Although they did lose me after the first paragraph and I only flicked through the rest.
If you only see it as a guide to available engines, then as a "swap guide" it would serve what purpose?? Maybe "Incomplete Toyota engine guide" would have been a more appropriate title. I would have been more impressed if they had gone to the trouble of collating cost and time estimates of fitting those engines into different model cars. I vaguely remember reading something about fitting a 3s-gte into a Sprinter(?), love to see a cost or time estimate on that conversion!
Maybe I expect too much from a mag.... Or I could just be a grumpy old bastard that is way outside their target audience.
Darren.

I had a squiz at the article today. Good idea, but a price guide would have made it a LOT better, and it was too limited to be of any real use. I didn't see 1G listed at all. And what's up with 22RE heads getting cracks????!!!

22RE getting head cracks? from all accounts, the 22RE is just about indestructable ... guys in the states go 200k MILES without a reco.... and hell, mine is at 215K, not bad considering the way i treat it

I know, I know. That's what the article said - maybe someone who acually bought the mag can clarify.
My 22RE has ticked over 190,000. All it's had, I think, is a new timing chain&guides about a year ago. Got a bit of an oil leak but appart from that, still strong.
Just need a ported head/hotter cam/headers

$6k?!?!? dont know where you got that figure from -$1300 for a front cut (maybe a bit more nowadays) -$700 for the exhaust -find someone who can fabricate you some engine mounts, or gets the specs on some and do it yourself -find some friends who know a bit about cars (especially some of the toymods guys who have done the swap before) and go to work
couldn't cost much more than $3k by my figuring

Trust me. It adds up. Dont forget to change things like timing belts, clutches, fluids, filters and stuff when you change the engine. You have no idea how good the clutch is, until it breaks a few months into your conversion. A lot easier to change when everything is out. There is another $350-500. You may be able to get a 1G front cut for $1300. Most of the GA70 1GGTE front cuts I've seen go for around $2000. A bit more if you are stuck over here in Perth. The mounts are the easiest bit of all! They just require a bit of ingenuity! Then there is engineering, pit fees etc.

$2k? I'm not paying that.. I'll wait around for a cheaper one I've seen 1JZ-GTE auto half cuts for that although good luck fitting it in the bay
