7M-GTE Issue - Diagnostic Code 31 (WITH VIDEO OF PROBLEM) Tue, 24 May 2005 00:31 Go to next message
Hi All,

I own a 1990 MZ20 Soarer, powered by a wonderful 7M-GTE engine! (sarcasm!) I recently had the car converted from its standard auto a340 box to a 5 speed w58 box that I scored off a Supra. Gearbox aside as soon as I got it back i started having engine issues, running incredibly rich and stalling constantly - found that this was the hose coming from underneath the turbo to the intercooler had cracked and blown off completely with the extra pressure. This was fixed.

Now my current problem - I haven't heard a peep from the car in 2 weeks or so until randomly it starts jolting around a bit while driving, and will stall if i don't keep the revs up whilst changing down gears. The car displays an error code 31. I know this to be AFM related so I have tried my first AFM, and a spare one that I had from another engine... both exhibit the same results.

The other day I was attempting to fix the car, started it and then shut the bonnet... the car stalled immediately which lead me to beleve there was something loose. I started the car again and shut the bonnet, it stalled once more.

I started the car again with the bonnet open and gave my strut brace a few thumps with my fist and it once again stalled.

I can't seem to find exactly where the problem is, so i've been randomly swapping parts from my spare engine to this one, so far i've only done the AFM and the IASC (idle air speed controller) after cleaning it properly of course

My car is booked into an auto elec but i thought there might be a guru here that could give me some advice as i'm still not even sure if the issue is mechanical or electrical!

Cheers for ANY info you guys can give me, as my car is pretty much undriveable at the moment

A video with quite good sound of the problem can be found here

Check the resistance between pins on both AFMs, make sure they are the same.

Clear the codes, start the motor up, then get it to stall again.
Then check the codes, see of the ecu picks up the culprit.

Then carefully check the wires on what it says.

ohhh no avoid bobs generic auto wireing buchery thats typical of most sparkys in the automotive trade.... clean your AFM plug and use common sence and tap around with the head of a screwdriver till you hit gold

I did use a slightly larger piece of metal to hit things in the engine bay (3 foot long metal bar from my jack Smile ) and was "tapping" in the general vicinity of the TPS and IASC and it stalled after a few taps around there

i've changed it over to my spare IASC after cleaning it. Could it be the TPS?

The jolting issue doesn't occur unless i only have my foot resting on the accelerator, If i put my foot down the car will seem to take off normally... its only at cruising speed that it seems to jolt, or if my foot is not on the accelerator at all. I also have a S-AFC, i hope this couldn't be causing it?

If you aren't doing that revving then you have an intake leak somewhere.

lose the SAFC and see if it still does it... also clean the TPS connecters and look at the MA70 service manual online on how to re-set the TPS

Could it be a dead coil pack?

To find to see if it is, use a timing gun on each lead to see if the coil is sending a spark...

Cheers.

chances of 2 afm's bieng bad are slim, but that video was how my 7m acted when i had the afm unplugged.

unplug your afm and see if it makes a difference, if no difference, then u need another afm.

One other thing i forgot to mention lastnight was the fact that I could hear the fuel pump changing frequency when the revs would drop etc... normally its a constant high pitched whistle noise but it was quite erratic when i went to the back of the car to take that video

Update - Electrician has hooked my car up to a laptop and some program called Electra, he reckons the problem is the AFM in the fact that the signal coming into it is alright but the signal coming out is screwed. I took my spare AFM down to him and he's tested that as well and reckons its also stuffed. I find this hard to beleive...

Anyone have a known working AFM that I could borrow to test before I go spending heaps on getting mine fixed?

Alternatively I do have a 1UZ AFM at home with 550cc injectors and a new Walbro pump to go in. If i plugged in this AFM without the injectors just to test it... what would happen?

ahh if only you were on the west coast.. i need someone with a 7MGTE coil pack to do a test with as well.. Smile

surely your S-AFC would have picked up weird karman frequencies though right if it wasnt working properly?

The auto elec has actually removed the S-AFC completely to make sure that its not faulty as well

so it can't be that! Confused
