Pulling Axles on an 86 (JDM) Tue, 24 May 2005 08:32 Go to next message
Heeelp

OK, i either have stubborn axles, or im making a stoopid mistake. The Diff is off the car, the brakes (calipers and disks) are off the housing, and i have undone the 4 bolts behind the axle that hold the bearing cover thingy and stone guard etc onto the housing.
Now the problem is, the F'ing axles wont come out, and before i go skitzoid with the slide hammer Evil or Very Mad , i want to make sure there's nothing stupid im missing.
All my life ive only ever worked on cars with IRS, so this is new territory for me, so its bound to be me being stupid, but Im pretty good at that Rolling Eyes

yeah as long as the axle retaining plate bolts are undone go at em out with the slide hammer...youve allways gotta give them some persuasion.....i prefer to put the disc/drum on backwards and use that as a kinda slide hammer.....

these things can be a real bitch.

it took me nearly 3 hours of bashing the fark outta mine with a hammer to get my driver's side out the first time.

make sure when you put it back in, you smeer the outside of the bearing with some 'never-seize' or something like that...that way next time.. Very Happy

axles can be a real bitch on some cars. especially if they havnt been taken out for ages. i had to chain an escort diff to a tree and chain the axle to a bobcat bucket and yank it. took 3 full pulls before it flew out at amazing speed and almost hit me in the head. haha. tried using the dingo but that wasnt powerfull enough.

so yeah they can be hard. if those 4 bolts are undone then itll come out. if your in perth ive got a 2 metre sl;ide hammer made for pulling axles if u wanna use it.
if not try making one. not hard.

anyways hope that helps
cheers

2 meter slide hammer?? Very Happy Monstah
Thanks for the offer but i'm in Syddley , so if it comes to that i will make my own i guess.

I was considering heating the housing a little with a torch, but i dont want to stress the bearings any more than necessary.

I just gave it a go for about 15 minutes just now, and its moved about 1.5 mm, then my neighbours told me to stop making noise. I hate living in a unit, Ill have to give it a good go tomorrow arvo before it gets late.
