POD with Heat Shield --- Still = Defect ? Tue, 24 May 2005 14:58 Go to next message
Allrighty, im just curious.

I didnt really want to, but i put a K&N pod on my new car becuase i needed an air filter urgently and it was going to take a long time to source a ep71 air filter.

Im going to make up a heat sheild for it this weekend, was wondering which of these will apply when i get pulled over.

1-The copper defects me anyway cause it doesnt look standard

2-The copper tries to make me take it off to get a better look so he can defect me

3-The copper does nothing because he can't see what is under there

4-He tells me its not legal but to go on my merry way

Number 4 is highly unlikely but i thought id throw it in there.

Number 4 could be possible if the coppers having a good day and you r polite to the dude/dudette. I've gotten off with being nice and friendly.
But apart from that i think its more to do with an EPA thing which if i'm right would mean it'd be the coppers judgement call

yeh damn epa. . .

I'm going to cover it completely and run an induction pipe up from the front bar straight into it. Also going to spray it black.

Hopefully this will make it look a bit more stock looking. . .

umm.. my understanding is the K&N is fine, no issues with it. It just needs to be solidly bolted on and have no give in it. over here what theyre supposed to do if they inspect under your bonnet is to grab hold of the air filter and give it a push to see if its fixed on properly. K&N is about the only brand i think is accepted.

Recently reading the RTA sight if a pod is in an enclosed shield it is fine on the notion that induction noise is less than a certain decibel (90 i think) look at the RTA site it will tell you. Other than that it also states that due to EPA legislation any filter that uses oil is a defect. It must be a paper/dry element filter.

Just been thru all of this with my car and the engineer.

Basically....

Pod Filters in their own right are not illegal
The fact that they increase induction noise by a large amount on most cars is what makes them illegal if the car is subjected to the ADR "drive by" test of noise.

What I have done is mounted a pod filter INSIDE a factory airbox that had to be modified to clear the new (non factory) intercooler piping. The original panel filer could no longer be used, so a pod filter was the only other option.

Engineer looked at it last week and said great job, and passed it no problems.

if it looks stock and is mounted solidly and properly i cant see why any you would ever be defected unless making a scene
of it all.
