3sgte cold idle (low revs) Wed, 25 May 2005 06:22 Go to next message
st165 gt4,

when i start the engine in the cold, it idles at like 400-500rpm, then warms up and gets to 900rpm. all other forms of cooling etc work fine. the car maintaines a constant temp.

so yeah, only problem is cold starts make the car idlre really low till it warms up.

any ideas?

Granted this is only one possible cause, but is worth checking nonetheless:

(this is off a ST185 manual, but the principle should be the same.)

thanks for posting that, effort appreciated.

but like i said, the idle is normal at warm temperatures.

i was tempted to get at the ISC valve this morning when it was idleing terrably, but thought id wait it out as it was not gona fix the problem properly.

I know you said that...and the fact remains that the diagnostic procedure for this type of valve is to test it when the engine has reached normal operatin temp. This will tell you if the ISC is doin its job or not...

if the revs dont pick up considerably when you unplug it then it is stuffed, if they do, check elsewhere.
