LSD noise? Wed, 25 May 2005 08:14 Go to next message
Had my TRD 2 way installed last friday and had an incident with a retarded tyre fitter mis-matching rear tyre sizes and therefore over working the LSD untill it diveloped a nasty clunking noise, this was on the sat so i parked it all weekend (not even thinking to check if tyre sizes were the same) and drove it straight to the diff place mon morning were they told me that it shouldnt have damaged anything as it still feels very tight and to fitt identical sized tyres.

I did this and she drove like a dream for 1 day until that clunking noise came back, this time only when accelerating from a dead stop and turing either right or left (not trying to break traction), i called the diff place again but they told me its just the clutches slipping and if it gets louder bring it back. does anyone else have a TRD LSD in there car and is it noisy like mine? I'm worried because it was quite for a while now its noisy again.
Can someone please help Sad

my lsd does this, but its from the castrol LSX90 oil i have in it, it's not suitable and doesn't allow the clutches to slip easily.

Going to try another LSD oil or add some ford friction modifier.
(anyone recomend a good LSD oil for G serious lsd?)

anyway probably not going to help you, but thought i would share it.

What diff oil are you using? It's naturally going to be a bit noisy back there. (ie clunking a bit when turning) I find when my diff oil is getting a bit old it starts to pop and bang a bit more.

That castrol shit is crap. I use this funky blue penrite 85/140 stuff. The only place I can find it is Bursons for around $20.

Hey dude

I have a TRD 1.5 way LSD the noise is normal for a mechanical lsd just make sure you have good oil in it. does it go away as you corner faster?
mine makes a racked at only parking speeds.
you should hear the noise up to a point, then you will hear your tyres sorta skipping...... if that makes sense.

i seriously doubt that mismatched tyres would bugger your diff it would make the diff work harder though.

I am using penrite 80w/140 atm
just make sure it is a good lsd oil
and btw there is a running in period and your diff place should be geting you to come in after that to have the oil changed, my recommended run in period was 400 kms.

If you hearinf funny knockinf sounds check the wheel nuts as you may have a loose wheel .... sounds funny but i had that happen to me when i went to a certain place..... never going there again.

Cheers

Ben

I use the Penrite oil myself, and in my Corolla (G diff) a few months ago I started getting some lovely clunking sounds, added a bottle of friction modifier (it was about $20!), and everyone's happy again. In the affordable oils, the Penrite is probably your best bet.

yeah it has got that penrite shit in it, i remember the guy at the diff place telling me how much he loves it. and yeah it only does it at low speed and also shudders the inside wheel.
And thanks for the advice for the oil change ill definatly do that.
