Speedo "ticking" noise Wed, 25 May 2005 11:37 Go to next message
I have the most annoying problem with the car,

The speedo in the car has become noisy, it starts "ticking" from 20km's and progressively gets faster and louder as the speed increases... all the way up to 100km/hr (and no doubt beyond).

Anyone know what would be causing this? .. damn its annoying.

does the needle also jump/twitch in-sync with the noise?
i'd lube/oil the cable, even if it doesn't

Yeah I have had a similar problem, a ticking noise from within the dash that I have traced to being the speedo cable. Mine's pretty erratic, some days it ticks and others its quiet. I actually took my instrument cluster out and drove the car around a bit and could definitely see and hear that it was the speedo cable and when I put my finger on it I could feel the clicking too.

I put some spray lube on mine, made a small difference but didn't eliminate the noise. When I do my engine/gearbox swap I'll just get another one and put up with it in the meantime....

Nup the speedo needle does not move around at all ... it still moves smoothly.

Yep my prob sounds very simular to yours , it started out very softly a week or so ago, and last night it was 10x louder.

So should I get some sort of silicon spray and go crazy with it on the cable?

Yeah my needle doesn't jump around either, just the damn ticking sound so it sounds like we have the same problem!

I tried spraying lithium lubricant on mine, but didn't cure it completely. Silicon may or may not do the trick, no idea. I guess the cable itself must have a slight kink or something to cause it to click the way it does.

Yes, it does - sorry, forgot to mention that earlier. The fact that the ticking became faster/slower with the speed of the car is what made me start investigating the speedo cable.

I had that happen to my SA63 for many years until the speedo cable snapped... We were told when we bought it that the cable was kinked Sad... AUD$30 later with another cable... The ticking noise was gone...

Most probably your cable is getting tired. Time for replacement...

*Anyone correct me if I am wrong.

Cheers.

i've had both both kinked/fraying cable (needle jumps) and stuck odometer (needle doesn't jump). the cable ticks at faster rate than odometer...

pull the cable out of it's sheath and check for kinks/broken wires...

if that's ok, and you are brave, pull the speedo apart.. it's very easy to fug them up tho, so be careful...

Cya, Stewart

oh, and until a few years ago, you could get KE10 speedo cables from toyota!

See if you can get one from a wrecked car or a car going to be wrecked. I don't know if the MA70/71 has the same speedo cable as that of the GA70 or JZA70...

For the reasons that you have discussed, I have a spare MA61 speedo cable hanging around as standby which I hopefully don't need to be replace/use...

Cheers.

I've just got this with my AE86. Very Annoying. But hardly noticable under the drowning exhaust.
