Scraping noise from rear wheel Thu, 26 May 2005 04:59 Go to next message
Ever since I put the new engine in I have been getting a strange scraping noise from my rear left(Passenger) wheel?
I dont know how to describe it, it sounds like metal rubbing on metal, theres no squealing, just scraping, when I stops it stops, but as I get faster it gets louder?
I havent noticed any differences in my handling or ride quality or braking, I will jack the car up tonight and see if it makes the noise when I spin the wheel, but does anyone know what could be causing it, and how I can go about fixing it?
Thanks heaps to anyone that can help me out with this.
Cheers.

Could be a whole bunch of things, but the first thing I'd check for is foreign objects in the brakes. If a stone or similar gets caught between the brake pad and rotor it will make a nasty scraping noise.

Could be axle bearing too Smile

Cheapest way out of that is to pull the axle out yourself.. Get bearings from a bearing shop not a spare parts shop (usually 1/2 the price I find).. There is one at Hornsby so close by.

The drop bearings and axle to mechanic to press off/on.

Cheers

If your car was off the road for a while while you did your engine swap, mabey the rear brake has frozen up a bit, and needs a bit of a rebuild?

Jacked the car up tonight, and spun the wheel and it made the scraping noise, so I removed the wheel and it still did it, removed the drum cover and it stoped, and I was able to make a small sand castle with the dirt that fell out and was blown/brushed off the brakes and drum cover.
Put the drum cover back on and it still makes the noise, not as bad but its still there.
That means its something to do with the brakes I assume?Like they are not springing back far enough to clear the braking area when not under brakes.
So yeah prolly what you said cannonball...it was only off the road for like 3 or 4 days tho?
If this is the case how do I go about setting the brakes so they spring back far enough?
Thanks heaps for the info so far and any more that comes!
Cheers.

If the brakes aren't springing back enough, perhaps the pistons ar binding up in the cylinder. Go to your friendly part supplier and ask for a rebuild kit (consists of rubber seals and rings n stuff)for both right and left cylinders (may as well do both, if you do one, it will often show up the weakness in the other.).

Pull the Piston cylinders out of the drum, and pull them apart, and inspect the pistons and bore. You might find they are rusted/gummed up a bit. Give them a gentle clean so you dont scratch them up too much, then re assemble, using some "safety circle" brake rebuild fluid (Any auto shop should have it). While your at it, Id also replace the shoes, as they could be thin, also adding to the chance of things binding up. Dont forget to bleed the brakes when you put it all back together.

One thing i havnt mentioned is the hanbrake mechanism, check this is all moving correctly.

If your still not to sure how to do a rebuild, get yourself a manual, or go see a pro.

PS, it could still be a bearings issue, but theres no harm in checking the brakes first, as they should be serviced pretty regularly anyway.

Ok, thanks for all ya help guys!
I took the car for a drive thismorning and the noise is gone!

Thanks again for all the info and advice!
Cheers.

never bother with rebuilding cylinders...not when a new pair are like $30.

rebuild kits are prob heaps less cost but i dont see the saving in cost as worth while IMO.

Cheers
