icon5.gif  Slow-arse internet connection HELP !! Sat, 30 November 2002 10:29 Go to next message
Why does my dial up connect at only 28.8 kbps whilst my mates connects at 115.2 kbps or something (hers isn't cable) !?!

What are the reasons for this ?

  1. modem... external vs internal (i have a 4 yr old modem..)
  2. phone lines... some people have told me that phonelines affect the rate at which u connect at... is this true ?
  3. i run an athlon 1.8 gig computer
  4. when i hook up my laptop, it sonnects at abt 38 kbps
  5. Im with TPG (could this be the reason ??)
  6. my friend uses a 55k modem BUT SHE CONNECTS AT 115.2kbps .. HOW !??!
  7. please helllllp !

Mad

Ps: Whos a cheap and good ISP ?

Try upgrading the modem firmware.
Try setting the Modem max connect speed at 57600
Disable "log onto network"
Only have TCP/IP enabled
Have server assigned name addresses

Try that.

> modem... external vs internal (i have a 4 yr old modem..)

External modems are usually more reliable as they dont depend on the cpu do its processing for it.

>phone lines... some people have told me that phonelines affect the rate at which u connect at... is this true ?

Phone lines play a major role in connection speed, but modem drivers would be my first suggestion to get updated.

> i run an athlon 1.8 gig computer

CPU only plays a part when the modem is an internal/USB as the modem asks the cpu to do some work for it.

> when i hook up my laptop, it sonnects at abt 38 kbps

maybe the laptop has more recent modem drivers.

>my friend uses a 55k modem BUT SHE CONNECTS AT 115.2kbps .. HOW !??!

Your friend is not connecting to the internet at 115.2kpbs, that speed is the speed from her pc to the modem (port speed), not from the modem to the internet.

Hope that helps you out.

modem... external vs internal (i have a 4 yr old modem..)

you probably only have a 33k modem time to get a 56k modem. external and internal modems have nothing to do with speed. mostly more to do with what you prefer. i have personally found that better brand name modems consistently connect at higher speeds then then no name modems

phone lines... some people have told me that phonelines affect the rate at which u connect at... is this true ?

depending on how close you live to the exchange can determine your internet speed. the further away the worst your line quality. there is nothing you can to about this. i only onnect at 31 on a good day while others i know connect at 50k

i run an athlon 1.8 gig computer

your computer speed has nothing to do with your internet speed connection. end of story

when i hook up my laptop, it sonnects at abt 38 kbps

this further suggests that your computer only has a 33k modem as your laptop is connecting at a higher speed then your computer. they should be both the same or there abouts.

Im with TPG (could this be the reason ??)

very unlikely. isp dont usually have a hge effect on speed. however i have noticed some isp do connect at slightly higher speeds. furthermore you yourself said that your laptop connects at a much higher speed and so your isp is not the problem

my friend uses a 55k modem BUT SHE CONNECTS AT 115.2kbps .. HOW !??!

your friend is definitely not connecting at 115k on a 56k modem...its impossible. as someone else said it is the maximum port speed. that is the maximum speed programs can tramsmit data to your modem. your friend probably doesnt have the correct driver for her modem and therefore the computer is not aware at how fast her modem is connecting so tell her the port speed instead.

i cant believe some of the info that has been fed to you. most of it is garbage. try upgraing your modem to a 56k and you should get similiar speeds to your laptop.

LOL..

You can spend as much money on a modem as you like but if you dont have the settings on your computer correct you will still get shit speeds!
I have 3 modems here and I have found that the cheapest one is the best! These are: Banksia Wave SP56, a Swann Smart and a Dynalink and the Dynalink pisses all over the other 2 and it cost less than $100!
But the best thing you can do is upgrade the firmware in your current modem, get the latest drivers(defualt windows driver normally is the best though) and then ring your isp's tech support and get the correct settings!

i disagree. the best thing you can do is upgrade to a faster modem. changing any sought of settings wont get you speed over 33k with your current modem. your laptop is prove enough that with a 56k modem your line is good enough to connect at higher speeds.

Yes it can. If you have a slow computer or are running out of RAM, the system load can get high enough to affect the TCP/IP layer of the OS and slow it down.
I've seen this happen. Albeit, on slow arse computers. But it can happen!

Of course, this doesn't actually affect the connection speed, just the rate of data throughput.

how did i know that he has a 33k modem. it pretty simple by comparing his connection speed on the laptop and pc on the same line. the laptop shows it very possible to connect at speeds over 33k but the computer is not achieving this. also the modem is over 4 years old. but do as cool1 suggested and get tech support on your connection speed but im 99% positive they will tell you to upgrade your modem and wont mention anything about settings

dont forget that those who use WIN 2000, your internet connections speed may be shown as something like 112bps or something, but this is really the compressed data throughput... the exact same computer and modem with me yields 112kbps on Win 2000, or 56kbps on Win XP

You cant tell that someone is using a 33.6k modem just because thy connect at 33k! As has been said that is just the connection speed not the speed of the connection! Most of the time I connect at lower than 33.6 but this does not mean i'm using a slow modem and it also doesn't mean that speed is slow! In fact I get great speeds(5.2k all night)downloading various things.

But anyway, Les just buy a cheap 56k modem! You can get them for les than $100!

i never said it was a 33k modem by purely looking at the connection speed. in fact im connected at 28.6k at the modem. what i did say was that i believe it was a 33k modem by comparing it with the speed of the laptop which was faster then 33k. first of all your saying change your settings. if you believe its settings why are you suggesting him to go out and buy a 56k modem

First off I thought he had a 56k modem thats why I said check settings!
Then the man himself said he has a 33.6 modem! Thats why I am now saying to buy a new modem!
